[ but her words pull the corner of his lips down, even if it's just for a moment. it's not fair of him to feel disappointed at her speaking as though she's new. he didn't know what the imps, or even high-queen morla herself, were capable of when someone was sent home to only arrive back. he hadn't expected her to be back. ]
[ he can't quite help the dismay creep into his voice, ] You don't remember. [ it's not phrased as a question. ]
no subject
I don't remember what? [ she didn't like the way he said that. she really didn't like it. ]
no subject
Nothing.
[ and a very sulky expression. he doesn't even try to feign indifference, as though his own observation doesn't weigh heavily upon a debbie downer's shoulders. ]
no subject
Nuh-uh. Not happening. Start talking, unless you wanna end up waist-deep in the floor here.
[ she'll do it. DON'T THINK SHE WON'T. ]
no subject
Look — [ cue an exasperated sigh — one that is directed completely at himself. ] It's nothing. You were just here before. We arrived together and then two months later you left.
[ and he cried like a little bitch about it, too. ]
no subject
That doesn't make any sense. How could I have been somewhere for two months that I don't remember at all?
no subject
I don't know! [ the frustration is clear in his voice, so palpable she probably can see it. ] It's probably the magic — [ still doesn't understand that that is, tbh. ] — of this place doing something to you. Maybe it's ... [ he's uncertain if he's uncomfortable or relieved at the thought that takes root and grows in his mind. he'd been so afraid toph had been taken from this world due to their screw-up with reynard and raonil. but he pauses nonetheless, his tone shifting from that characteristic frustration to something softer. ] Maybe it's giving you a second chance.
no subject
A second chance at what, exactly?

[ if there was a fire around here, the flames would be shooting thickly right through the ceiling with how he projects that. it's obvious, isn't it? in zuko logic, it's as bright as fire against a black backdrop. ]
We messed up when we were first here. High-Queen Morla never tasked you with a quest, but maybe that's why — [ zuko just stops there. maybe that's why she left, as some sort of punishment for the both of them. but he sighs, the action calming that inner fire of his right into an ember until she chooses to spark it once again. ] It doesn't matter. You're back now.
no subject
Whatever. I'm just gonna ignore you until I wake up and things start making sense again.

[ two can play at that game. crossing his arms against his chest, fists balled at his sides, zuko's prepared to ignore toph until she deems this not an incredibly vivid dream. he's pinched himself enough to have bruises lining his arms. sometimes, he wishes this was a dream, but zuko never gets what he asks for without stumbling and making a fool of himself. ]
[ he lasts a good two minutes before he looks at her. ]
Are you going to eat something?
no subject
and toph isn't about to give into the smell of warm food so easily. of course, that's when her stomach grumbles. for a dream, she's pretty dang hungry.
...urgh. ]
It smells funny.
no subject
[ he's not even trying to be immature — he just wishes to ease her nerves and get her to eat as she's already short enough. the food here isn't hot enough for zuko. it's almost like mud, sometimes — earth kingdom food tastes like that, but nothing as horrible as uncle's attempts at mud pies. ]
The tarts are nice.
no subject
Steak? [ she will take a big hunk of meat right now. sokka would be proud. ]
no subject
[ it's an absent-minded gesture to reach out and grasp her wrist to guide her to where he had last seen the steak that's the butt of all of sokka's very unfunny jokes. ]
