"Mostly I worked to hunt down and bring to trial wizards that were doing cruel magic, but there are others that enforce that. We're a hidden society. Magic isn't common knowledge and it's been a bit strange here, to get used to being able to use it openly."

Harry knows it's a strange sounding society, but it's what he's grown used to. "I raised not knowing about magic until I was eleven, and then the other wizards came and took me, to that school with the uniforms."

"Hidden society, huh?" Aeler replied, mulling the thought over. It was a strange thought, but it seemed to work, mostly since Harry was mentioning the presence of this society, and not its downfall. He supposed there were stranger things that had happened.

He barked a laugh at the last part. "Bit of a fucking surprise I bet."

Harry's own laugh is a short, sharp noise that mirrors Aeler's. "You could say that."

"For the first few weeks, I was sure it was a terrible joke being played on me, but one that I was ready to take full advantage of. I honestly think I must've eaten my own weight several times over just in case I had to go back." He looks out over the feast and his expression softens again as he recalls the Great Hall. "I think everyone else there, all those raised by wizards, they must've thought I was half-bear, readying to hibernate."

Aeler paused at both Harry's laugh, and what he said. Eyebrows rose, and he asked, "Didn't get a lot of food back at home?" His voice was neutral.

Harry shrugs, brushing it off. "The people that raised me weren't too pleased to have another mouth around. I wasn't really theirs, you see, and they took me in as a sort of servant."

It's not the literal, exact truth, and it's possibly more generous than the Dursleys deserve, but there it is.

"If they didn't want you around, then why did they keep you?" Aeler asks the obvious question. His mother had kept him until she couldn't anymore, and many others certainly didn't even get that long.

"It's all a bit complicated, but basically, they were told they had to keep me, and keep me alive, until I was taken to the school. Anything beyond alive was just a bonus." As he says it, Harry winces. That both is and isn't how it worked out and it sounds far worse when he says it.

Aeler shrugs at this answer; neither offering pity, nor dismissing the difficulty that Harry experienced. He merely accepted it for what it was, the world was a cruel one, Harry's story was one among many and histrionics would do nothing to better it.

"Well, in the end you survived through it." Aeler replied, taking another idle sip of his drink. "And really, that's all that matters."

If the other man doesn't complain, Harry will raise his glass to toast to that.

"Survival isn't always enough, but it's a damn fine start and hard to do anything much without it." Harry appears to be genuinely pleased at having met and chatted with Aeler.

Aeler smiles at that, and it's not his customary razor-edged grin, but rather something far more honest and revealing. "Yes." He agrees simply, toasting Harry back. "And I'll drink to a couple of survivors." His mouth twisted a little, amused as he adds, mild, for him at least, "Damn this wine. Making me sentimental."

"What do you suggest we do about that then?" Clearly they can't have too many feelings. What would Dasha say? "They put on a good spread, if you haven't eaten yet."
