...I've been called such.

[he doesn't relax, she's got a knife drawn after all, but if she's not fleeing to call someone or automatically trying to kill him, then she's a bit better than most of the strangers he meets. drawing away from being pressed against the wall, his posture returns to being stiff and formal.]

You and everyone else in the welcoming hall.

[ Anywhere else, Alice may have used her knife to retaliate. Not now, it would draw too much attention even if some wouldn't put it past her. If he doesn't do anything to her, neither will Alice, who finally relents before her stubbornness takes hold of her, sliding it back into place so that she can worry about later.

Maybe.

She maintains a heavy personal distance from everyone, there's never been an exception.]

So really, there's no need to lurk about.

[she's put that away, which means no fighting for now. good, because young woman or not, had she posed a threat he would have let the bolts fly.

he's still not sure he cares for that welcoming hall, though. at least a corridor, a room is something he can size up and categorize as safe. people, they took longer, and he knows he wouldn't make good company right now. one could sit with their back against the wall anywhere, not just at this feast.

but to reply to her, he nods once.]

I apologize for the lurking.

[ In actuality, she can't fault him for lurking away from the welcoming hall and the people. She finds it overwhelming, even after a few minutes. There's no safety of a costume or a mask.

Then there's the possibility of alcohol being present, something that she's growing to loathe based on how her friends react while drunk. She is not the most socially in tune and there is something in him that stirs that frustration in her much like Berserker does with her.

It's a part of herself she sees in some that frustrates her, not that Alice really knows. ]

Were you looking for something in particular or just avoiding the feast?

[ That harshness breaks in her finally and it is an honest question, because Alice is always curious. ]

[he almost doesn't answer, almost turns and just heads for that window to blink up from, where he won't have to answer questions or make apologies with words that still (how long would it be like this) fit a little oddly in his throat.

but he doesn't, not yet, and Corvo answers honestly.]

I was making an attempt to get the lay of the castle.
digophelia: (I fear for a while - my head)

[ She feels a little guilty catching him the way he is now. There's something very awkward about his voice, his posture. If she had to guess, he was very much like her and not used to conversation.

Alice was already plenty weary of men, but her sympathy for others can trump her hyper vigilance. One more step back, just as she begins to rock on the balls of her feet. ]

You can come and go as you please, there isn't anything holding you here.

[ Alice is giving him the option to bail and if he does, she can't blame him. She's often an very ill-tempered girl. But it is a reminder he doesn't have to be entirely under the rule of the monarchs. ]

There's always maps in the library that can help.
