[He's quiet for a moment, looking at Steve, before he finally answers.]

[Steve sighs, shoulders relaxing.]

Okay. Wanna kiss me, or want me to kiss you?

[He hesitates, then steps forward once, then again, closing the distance between them. He hesitates again, then reaches his hand behind Steve's neck, resting it there, his thumb gently rubbing through the short hairs.]

Gotta practice somehow.

[It feels right. Maybe there's muscle memory for more things than fighting. He takes a breath and leans in to press his lips gently against Steve's.]

[Steve arches a brow at that. He's watched Bucky kiss enough girls under the mistletoe, he's not doubting his skills.

His own, maybe. But he still cups his face the moment their lips touch, because that's what feels natural to him. A kiss should never be "just" a kiss.]

[There's a tightening feeling in his chest as the kiss lingers, and he realizes... he realizes he's wanted to do this for... a very long time.

He pulls back not long after that. But not far.

With his hand still on the back of Steve's neck, he looks at him a little nervously.]

That okay?

[Steve opens his eyes slowly, and if he was feeling any nervousness of his own (maybe a little), it's made less when he sees the same thing in Bucky's eyes.]

The girls always did love to kiss you. Now I know why.

[He smirks with the tease, but it fades into something softer and sincere.]

It was perfect.

[wipedclean]

[He takes a deep breath and nods, the corners of his mouth curving upward for a moment in... pride? Satisfaction? No. Not those, but he can't figure out... what. Maybe happiness, but that doesn't feel... totally right.

But it fades, because he still doesn't know... he's still missing something. Something that keeps him from leaning in again even though... he kind of wants to.]

Steve...

Yeah?

[Steve's smile fades, suddenly worried by something in Bucky's expression, his voice.]

Is something wrong?

[wipedclean]

[He hesitates, not sure if he knows how to say what he wants to say.]

I'm not...

[He pauses, wets his lips, tries again.]

I'm... missing. Something.

[A lot of things.]

[Steve sighs, resting his hand on his shoulder.]

You'll get it back.

[wipedclean]

[He nods, not really looking at Steve.]

I'm sorry.

Hey.

[Steve's tone asks him to look up, and he lifts Bucky's chin with his finger if he doesn't.]

You don't ever have to apologize to me. Got it?

[wipedclean]

[He lets Steve lift his head, and he looks at him, hears what he says, wants to believe it, but feels like he has to apologize for his whole existence sometimes.

But he doesn't say that.]
