No, that wasn't nearly as awe-inspiring as meeting King of Dale, at least not at first.

I met Bard, King of Dale--and unless you've a twin brother with the same name, I believe I am speaking to him again! Before he has slain a dragon and become king, however.

[lakeman]

[ Gimli, you are meen.

Bard turns about three different shades, ranging from stark white to reddened cheeks, in just as many seconds, before finally deciding that the dwarf is teasing him.

Because, really, he's never slayed a dragon in his life, and the Master has made sure there'll never be a king of his line for everything. ]

My parents had but one child, and I am he. Forgive me. I am unaccustomed to your sense of humor.

I am not joking, at least not about anything other than the twin. I did say I came from some time after you, didn't I? Eighty years. It has been eighty years since Bard the Bowman slayed Smaug the Terrible and became King of Dale.

[Not mentioning the whole "war" problem.]

[lakeman]

Eighty years...

[ The dwarf's tone makes Bard suddenly want to sit down. There's a bench for setting weapons on close by, and the archer opts for that instead of the ground. He sits there for a minute, just staring at the ground.

Then: ]

Did Esgaroth ... did my children survive?

Aye, and Bain was king after you. He only died a few years ago from my perspective and his son is now king.

[Poor man. Gimli stops a passing faerie and asks for some sort of drink for Bard.]

[lakeman]

[ Something strong. This is a lot to take in. ]

Bain is King. [... was King.] Sigrid and Tilda? Are they ... [ Not dead. He can't ask that. ] Are they well?

[gloinul]

When I last saw them--some years ago, but--they were all three well.

[Also not mentioning that Sigrid was here before.]

[lakeman]

[ His relief is practically tangible. At some point in Gimli's past - his own future - his children are alive and well. ]

Aye, well, you're not the first one for whom I've been the bearer of news--both good and ill, though mostly good.

[lakeman]

That can be a thankless job, Master Gimli, depending on the news.

Aye, I know. Still, someone has to do it and I am the only one who can and will.

[lakeman]

I would offer you a drink, but you have beaten me to that as well.

All the same, if we are to be neighbors in this land, then you are welcome in whatever quarters I can claim as my own. Sir.

I currently do not reside in the castle, traveling with my cousins, but I offer the same to you--and the beer!

[The faerie returns just as he says that, handing over two tankards with a warning that it's very strong and they shouldn't operate anything larger than a horse after drinking it]
