A man of discerning tastes, are we?

[Balthier's voice is ninenty percent smarm and ten percent charm, as it usually is, and that carries through in everything he does - the way he leans against the wall, the way he swirls the wine around the glass before downing the whole thing.

That might shatter the illusion a little, but hey, he's a pirate. Much as he adores the rakish glamour of the whole thing, he has to admit that the feasts are few and far between. At least, the ones he's invited to.
]

I'm afraid I can't agree, though. If you ask me, it's dreadful enough already. Far too much glaze, for one thing. Of course, our hosts aren't a fan of the light touch, are they? [First he's dragged in a sack, and then he's told about a massive war that could destroy his entire world, and then there's a gorgeous - by some definitions - feast? Clearly they only know how to go heavy.]

Of course, only the best will do for the disgraced scion of House Pavus.

[ Dorian smirks, spitting his title as more of an insult to himself than a boast. He likes your roll, Balthier. Dashing and smooth but dangerous-- the last bit is something Dorian can't pull off at all. Oh, you charmer, you. ]

Judging by our surroundings and the lavishness of the buffet, I would have to agree. [ And yeah, there is the whole 'drafting you into a war' thing that Dorian would really rather not think about else he'll start wanting to set things on fire.

But parties? Oh, he loves parties. And meeting charming, entertaining people of varied status. Stirring his glass and smiling, Dorian offer Balthier a nod.
]

Dorian Pavus, a pleasure. Or just Dorian, if you like.

[Balthier's eyebrow raises, a twitch, at that title, the way Dorian tosses it around like a punchline. He likes your roll too, Dorian, and the grin on his face loosens just a bit, less tight-lipped smugness and more genuine interest.

Just a bit, though. No need for him to make his new friend full of himself, and Balthier's practiced enough that all his tells are deliberate on his part.

Though the wine might change that. Best to avoid that third glass.
]

Balthier. Likewise, m'lord. [He says it with a grin, like a joke between old friends, then moves on.]

I'd call myself the leading man, but that story's become a little muddled, of late. A twist is all well and good, but this is rather out of left field for a rogue like myself.

I can value a jewel as much as the next man, [Balthier taps his own chest, twice, right where they'd said the shard was.] but all this talk of duty doesn't sit well with me. Shardbearer, chosen, important - conscript might be more apt. I've no interest in a war where the winner gets nothing and the loser gets...

[He chews on his choice of word, for once, thinks it over long and hard.]

Nothing, in a a different sense.

[ Dorian smirks at his odd choice of words. That's certainly one way to look at life. Not a bad one, mind you. He'll play along, since they seem to be getting on so well. ]

Well, Balthier, one might say there's been a shift in the genre, hmm? [ Dorian's not sure what kind of 'story' Balthier might come from, but dashing rogues don't really go so well with wars like these. ] I myself provided more of a supporting role to our grand tale, but normally there's a hero at the helm of these things, unifying the world for a good cause. I wouldn't call our Queen that, certainly.

[ There's no heart in it. Figuratively, not literally, though he supposes there might be some of that too. It doesn't sit well with him, all this talk of shards and magic. Being without his own is even worse. For all his smiles, Dorian's words lack much of his earlier humor. ]

They do a good job of trying to varnish the truth, but regardless of the glaze a war is still a war. And we, it seems, have been made the pawns in a rather large chess game.

[ He scoffs, shrugging off the matter with a sip of his drink. ]

At least the wine is good.

Better a pawn than a king, I say. Opportunities for advancement, for one. [Usually a few left when the game ends, too, even on the losing side.

He shrugs at the mention of the wine, swirls his empty glass around in his hand.
]

Too heavy for my tastes. It might be poor manners to complain, but I prefer mine to go down easy. [There's that gag again. Everything here is laid on far too thick. He might be harping on it overmuch, but it rings true.]

Careful not to have too much. You risk losing your golden tongue.

Too true. Quite a shame that pawns are generally the first pieces to fall, however.

[ Dorian smiles like he's called check in a chess game. Not that he's trying to win or lose, but he is trying to voice his dissatisfaction with as much sass as possible. So there's that.

But then, Dorian is great at disagreeing with people. He does it all the time with the Chantry sisters back in Thedas.
]

And who could blame you? Too much more of this and I'll be waking up tomorrow wondering where I've put my smalls. [ And yet he takes another swig to mark his words. It's strong stuff, but that just makes it more fun. ]

In all my travels, I've found that drinking is one of life's few consistent pleasures. I'm proud to say tongue is almost completely immune.

[ No he's not. ]
