For the Dead to remain in life, they must steal life from the living. [None's sat Sabriel down yet and explained that undeath works differently in different worlds.] But if they're already passing on, I leave them alone, unless a necromancer is trying to enslave their spirits.
respired: will you pick me up again (when i'm falling down)

You need to expand your horizons.

What I need is to return to the Old Kingdom. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be possible at the moment.

But wherever I am, my responsibility remains.
respired: and it sets you free (if you search your soul)

[personal profile] respired 2015-01-05 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Your responsibility is to that kingdom, and to its laws, its rules, its expectations. As you've just acknowledged, you are no longer in that kingdom. You might need to adjust.
bindsthedead: (art-explaining)

[personal profile] bindsthedead 2015-01-05 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
My responsibility also draws from my connection to the Charter, and to Death. The first is still intact, although the latter is... somewhat altered. And in any case, if people are being troubled by the Dead, if I have the power to help them, I should.
respired: i've fallen for someone who's nothing like you (oh lord oh lord what do i do)

[personal profile] respired 2015-01-05 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
[With a little amusement in his tone.]

Define 'troubled'.

If the Dead are harming the living- or such an attack is imminent. Or if a necromancer is killing people and bringing them back as his servants- either by enslaving their spirits, or using their corpses to house more powerful Dead. [Sorry, for a teenager, Sabriel is used to assuming she's the most knowledgeable person around when it comes to Death and necromancy.]
respired: and it isn't for play (but it's not just for work)

[personal profile] respired 2015-01-05 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't worry -- I only harm the living if they deserve it. [Most of the time.]
bindsthedead: (art-shock)

[personal profile] bindsthedead 2015-01-05 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
What- is that supposed to be a joke? That's not funny! [And it suddenly dawns on Sabriel in horrifying clarity that she's been talking to something Dead.]
Edited 2015-01-05 23:23 (UTC)
respired: here but now they're gone (all our times have come)

[personal profile] respired 2015-01-05 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I never joke.
bindsthedead: (art-speech)

[And then Sabriel whistles. It's partly reflex, partly an attempt to see if magic channeled through sound can be transmitted over the lockets. It's weak, even if it does get through- the equivalent of poking someone with your finger, rather than grabbing them.]

You- you are- [Probably one of the Greater Dead, if it- he? can speak without a necromancer sounding Dyrim.]
respired: for better or worse (my boy builds coffins)

[personal profile] respired 2015-01-06 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
[Her casting nettles him -- he can't tell what it's for, or her intention, but it's aggravating nevertheless. He scowls.]

A death knight. A death knight with little patience.
bindsthedead: (art-explaining)

I am so, so sorry

[personal profile] bindsthedead 2015-01-06 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
What is that? Some sort of Dead Adept? [Sabriel is torn between fear aggression, and confusion- because none of this makes sense.]
respired: you're a marked man brother (the day i stop is the day i'm through)

no worries!

[personal profile] respired 2015-01-06 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
[What.]

No.
bindsthedead: (curious)

[personal profile] bindsthedead 2015-01-06 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
['Death Knight' isn't a phrase she's familiar with, and isn't causing any forgotten pages of The Book of the Dead to suddenly be remembered.

Sabriel is at a loss, and decides to try another tactic- simply asking.]

Well then, what is a 'dead knight'? [Perhaps he simply means that he was a knight when he was alive, but Sabriel's not making any assumptions.]
respired: i'll shoulder the load i'll swallow the shame (give me the burden give me the blame)

[personal profile] respired 2015-01-09 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
A complicated question. Some are slaves to a greater entity of undeath. Others have wrested their will free of his grasp, like myself. But we retain our own intelligence, regardless.
bindsthedead: (art-speech)

[personal profile] bindsthedead 2015-01-09 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Ah. Most necromancers and Greater Dead don't bother giving most of their servants much in the way of intelligence, where I'm from.

How did you break free?
respired: are you the cure (i am a virus)

[personal profile] respired 2015-01-09 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Our intelligence was not given. It was simply not taken away after we were killed and raised from undeath.

As to your other question ... [He shrugs.] A miracle.
bindsthedead: (curious)

[personal profile] bindsthedead 2015-01-09 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
Ah. That's unusual. [In Sabriel's experience, Necromancers tended to use spirits long Dead as their more intelligent servants, rather than worry about their victims remembering their deaths and taking revenge.]

Powerful magic, or... something else?
