W-Well, the roof needs repaired for starters. It doesn't look very dignified to have so many buckets everywhere every time it rains. And a lot of the houses in town could use the same treatment. But assuming I can't carry over money, then I'll use the money here to buy books for everyone to study from and a place where we can meet. Either way, no money will go to waste. The only thing I hate more than evil is money poorly spent.

... sounds like your magic guild has fallen on pretty hard times...?

Anyways, I don't have any money at all, right now. So I'm afraid I'm a poor mark.

Hard times just test the strength of the members! But, uh, even if you don't have any money, membership fees can come later. [With interest!] So we'd still be welcome to have you!

[Normally he would have put a stop to this by now, but he's curious why she would still be talking to him given no magic and no money.

Also, he has a really hard time saying no to cute girls.]

What would someone without magic even do in a magic guild? I'm not particularly good at anything. I'm just average.

[Because she's desperate.]

Everyone has something they're good at. Look, I'm a prodigy at magic but even if I hadn't had that, I would have gone into accounting. I'm great at budgeting and balancing finances. It didn't come naturally to me but I worked on it slowly. I know this old guy who can't do anything but make really good tea. He knows the best ways to prepare all sorts of teas. He just figured it out because he likes tea, though, not for any other reason.

What I mean is average people matter, too. Sure, they're useless at magic but even something like organizing books or helping with recruiting or making flyers or helping in the vegetable garden... Everyone has a role.

I'm glad to hear that I matter [less glad when "mattering" primarily involves drudgery], but what benefit would there be for a normal guy like me to pay membership fees and do labor for a magic guild?

Well, for starters, very few people are born with no magical talent. You could try learning magic. For another, I will fight for anyone in my Guild. As the Premier, your safety and happiness fall on my shoulders. Basically, I can promise to teach you to survive in this world and ensure that you do, too.

... [Well, he can't say he wouldn't feel better if someone was looking out for him. Even if... that some one is a fairly tiny, fairly pushy young girl.]

That's an unexpectedly good argument.

I'm full of them! [She sounds quite proud.] I might be just a little focused on my finances-- [Understatement of the year.] --but I don't break a promise. It'd be bad for my reputation after all.

Lemina, right? I'm Oreki. Umm.. Houtarou Oreki, but most people just call me Oreki.

I want to just focus on getting home right away for now, but if that doesn't pan out, I'll keep your offer in mind.
