"He's fine," Varric answered reassuringly. "I don't know that he's in these parts, though. Who managed to snag you to their side? The Unseelie or the other guys?"

Varric didn't think of himself as being terribly Unseelie, but Bethany was too sweet of a girl to be anything but a Seelie.

Bethany would be glad he's not here, but things aren't exactly better back home, either. Maybe it would be better if he were here. At least then they'd be together again, perhaps.

"The Seelie." Right as usual, Varric. "I take it from the way you said it, you're with the Unseelie?" Though he's not really the type to cooperate unless he wants to. Good luck with that Unseelie.

"That's me, always the thing I'm not supposed to be. But I haven't rubbed shoulders with them since the day they threw a sack over my head." The Unseelie were hardly accommodating for their captured shardbearers. "And as your Seelie... well, I just as soon keep my distance from either side."

Right about now he was hoping for some Champion or Inquisitor to show up and start talking sense.

No, he should not be one of them, if they're all that bad. Though perhaps if Varric is among them, they're not evil. Maybe misunderstood, like any of the mages from their world.

"I'm not fond of the idea of taking up arms in a war I don't fully understand. What will you do? Stay here?"

"Possibly. It's a good place to start sowing seeds. I don't want to be here any longer than I have to, but I work better with some income and some contacts." He sighed wearily. "Maker, but I'm getting too old to start all over again."

"Seems like we're always resowing seeds."

Lothering. Kirkwall. And now this.

At the last, she smiles and reaches over to squeeze his arm. "Varric, don't talk such nonsense. You're not old at all."

"You're too sweet for your own good, Sunshine. But my spine puts up a better argument than you do."

Varric had dived into this lifestyle young. He'd been in his early thirties when he'd first met Hawke. But now he'd reached forty and it was a hard thing contemplating starting over in this world.

She was only eighteen when they walked into Kirkwall. She's a grown woman now. It's hard to believe how much changed in those years. Some things don't change, though. Some people don't, and Bethany is glad for that.

"Well, I won't hear one word from your spine." She smiles. "Maybe you could use some help here?" Not because he's old, of course.
