[And isn't that just the way? His will looks like it might hold strong -- for the moment, anyway, for once in his life -- and so, life had to push a bit more. Without him lifting a finger, there's a piece of luscious lemon cake on his plate, and a sweet young lass offering it to him. He tries to remember what the rules are, for taking fae gifts. Will declining be considered rude? Will accepting it be as much a trap as eating it all on his own? Christ.

He smiles, thin lips pulling up, nothing joyous in his eyes, and shakes his head.]

Naw, love. No thank you. I'm -- well enough without.

The guest right is...it's important.

[ she repeats herself. westerosi ways are rare enough in these lands, but she adheres to them like a castaway clinging to her floating piece of ship. ] Partaking in their food at their table is a covenant: a good one. You ought to respect them.

[ an undercurrent of it will be easier for you if you do. ]

[A covenant. That feels very close to a confirmation of his suspicions. Or maybe he's reading too much into it. Or maybe he's not. Regardless, he's a stubborn fool of a man, and doesn't feel inclined, just yet, to abandon his fast.]

I'm not a man for covenants. [Well, no. Bad way of putting it.] I don't like making agreements without knowing all the terms.

The terms are merely hospitality.

[ she inches forward on her side of the bench. and she places a second lemoncake gingerly upon the centre of her own plate. ] Where I am from, the guest right is a staple every visit.

[ perhaps she wouldn't ordinarily know that it needs explaining...except that she's been here long enough, spoken with enough non-westerosi, to know what they hadn't yet learned. ] Guest and host share bread and salt, and that act binds them in hospitality. Neither will let harm befall the other so long as they share their roof.
