A prince and commander should be more calm than that, but he has been through too much and is too confused for calmness. He frowns, as short and snappish with his answer as the other man was with his questions.]

[altaïr sniffs, squaring his shoulders. he chose the wrong man to ask, but perhaps there is something this man has heard that he has not. the bite in richard's tone has him tip his chin. he should watch his tongue.]

Yes. The same as you. [His replies are still curt, a habit born as much from constant soldiering as from aggravation, but he appears ever so slightly more calm. As he so often does, Richard gives impression of a civilized exterior just waiting for an excuse to lash out violently.] I know we are not in France. I have been told I cannot return to my own lands. I doubt you can return to yours.

[Whatever foreign and unsavory lands they might be. Not that Richard is judging. He's cultured after all and it will take more than skin tone or funny clothing to make him dislike someone. A bad attitude might do it though.]

[richard nods. this is familiar territory now. he has met syrians before in various courts and cities, either free travelers or those taken by force in the crusades before he was born.]

I do. My mother went on crusade there almost forty years ago.
