Cinemas?

[ She considers this and nods. The spellcasting sounds familiar, but she has no idea what the first thing is supposed to be. ]

We have spells like that on Azeroth, though I imagine some people use them for entertainment when they feel like it. I would not know, as I have no magic to speak of.

[ Not precisely true -- she's brimming with dark magic, magic from beyond the grave. But it's not proper magic, the magic that people study and craft, so she would never willingly tell anyone about it. ]

Images are made on transparent film, and projected onto large screens. If you put one image after another, quickly, you can create moving pictures.

No magic you can manipulate, you mean? [Sabriel's not sure if she's simply not aware of her own nature, or deliberately lying. Abhorsens might not raise the Dead, but their powers are essentially necromantic.]

Reanimation of the Dead always involves magic, in my experience.

I am no mage, if that is what you're asking.

[ She looks at the girl out of the corner of her eye, a wry smile playing on her lips. Despite the assumed levity, it really doesn't feel like a very happy expression for her -- in fact, her voice seems icier than before. ]

And where you come from, do the undead choose their fate? Or is it given to them unwillingly?

Sometimes the Dead cling to life, striving to live again after their time as passed- often losing everything but that desire. Other spirits are prevented from passing on by necromancers, and bound to their will. [Sabriel scowls, fingers moving over the handles of her bells, feeling the mixture of Free and Charter magic within them.] And a handful of necromancers choose to trade life for power, becoming Dead Adepts. Thankfully, those are uncommon.

[ She shakes her head briefly -- her mouth tightens as she considers the implication that some people would want to stay alive so badly that they just accept being undead. Of course, the other two versions are very similar to home, so she can't really say it's any different. ]

They are uncommon in Azeroth as well, though we call them by a different name. They are no more welcome, however.

Azeroth is the name of the country you come from? [It's not one Sabriel has ever heard of, but perhaps she shouldn't be surprised.]

The world I come from.

[ The correction is slight, but important; she would never consider it a country, as that would be rather too small. ]

There are several countries, but the conception of the undead is the same.

Ah. The Dead are unfortunately common in the Old Kingdom- [Unfortunately, a prince decided to become an undead abomination and ruined EVERYTHING.] but they have cannot move far past its southern border. Most people in southern Ancelstierre don't even believe they exist.

[ WOW THAT SOUNDS AWFULLY FAMILIAR your world and hers share a lot in common, not that she would ever willingly tell the full story of Arthas and his reign of destruction without some measure of making her own triumphs seem greater than his failure. ]

What a ridiculous notion. I can move wherever I please.
