( He is interesting. Lagertha takes the full measure of him, and finds that he carries himself with a bearing that suggests authority. Like Haraldson, if he'd had thrice the tones he'd been born with. This man is used to commanding others. She doesn't need to try to guess as much; but whatever else there might be to him, she can't yet fathom.

That is what makes him worthy of note. In this foreign hall, he walks and sits where he pleases. As though he owns it all.

Something that to some degree, they have in common. Because she eats as much as she pleases. If it has been provided for all to partake of such bounty, then there is no need to stand on ceremony. Lagertha inclines her head, the ghost of a smile playing upon her lips, and raises her goblet to touch brims with his own.

The armour is fab. But if she's to be impressed, it isn't me fancy gear. )

Skol.

( The traditional toast of her people. There is no skull of some poor sap here to drink from, but the ornate glass will work nicely. Taking a deep draught from the chalice, she replaces it on the table. )

And thirst. As our hosts have seen fit to provide such bounty, the least we might do is partake.

[Gilgamesh doesn't recognize the foreign tongue, though figures it for a greeting in good spirit and so nods his acknowledgment. His kingdom may have exceeded all the rest, but he understands that there's beauty to be found in the languages and the lands of others, beyond his borders and further still beyond the reaches of the sea. She pays him respect, and he rewards it in kind with a smile in equal favor.]

They yet pale before Babylon's bounty, but they've certainly made quite the effort in courting us. [Even if he's personally less than impressed with having certain toys taken from him.] I could learn to like it here, I suppose, if not for the rest of these mongrels milling about... they fail to see the higher powers at play here.

[Magic and monarchs and the trappings of absolute rule. But the sharpness of form caries to her eyes, so he can't help but wonder if she understands those subtler machinations as well.]

( Babylon. Her people have travelled far and wide, and yet she knows naught of them ever having reached the shores of such a kingdom. However, the name itself is vaguely familiar, thanks to having a scholarly monk as a house slave, later a friend. She tilts her head, curiosity and the beginning of understanding lighting her gaze. )

I would agree on that score. ( His armour and finery are clearly the trappings of luxury and bespeak of a full treasury. ) We are not required to like it here. The others do not understand that there is no need to side with either party in this war unless there is a substantial benefit or incentive involved.

( She, herself, is not about to become a mindless soldier. ) Power can be taken with the sharp edge of a sword. Allies unaffiliated with these kings and queens might be made. I plan to take stock of every detail before I chart my course.

It seems we are of a like mind in that regard.

( Indeed, she understands. By the outcome of one battle, her husband has been elevated from a farmer to an earl. Life rewards the bold as much as it does those who understand how to navigate the tedious business of politicking. She smiles at him, and then takes another long sip of her wine. )
