[ a quick, understanding nod -- he's never one to waste gesture when he doesn't need to, all efficiency as he is. with his various papers against Eren's gathered experience, he thinks (wryly) that he must seem rather old. but study helps to back up personal accounts, and Erwin's always had a fondness for maps anyway, especially of new, strange places.

still, he doesn't want to tarry long, and that's partially because of Eren's presence, partially because there's so much more to see, and partially because this forest is unsettling in a dark, insidious way. it sets his nerves on edge in a way the forests beyond the wall never could, deep and towering and dangerous though he knew them to be. back there, even though they'd known so little about their enemy, about their world, they'd had expectations to run on. here, in the gloom of La Llorona, he has no such security.

Eren is a far cry from the squads and captains of the Survey Corps, it's true, but he still brings a piece of it, and a companionship that Erwin is glad of right now. ]

I imagine that was in your best interests, [ he says eventually, folding papers and rising to his feet. he turns to look at Eren directly. ] Solo exploration of this place is likely inefficient. [ definitely unwise, but he's learning that could be said for so much of this land.

it doesn't detract from the thrill of discovering it, however. ]

[ Unwise is on point. Eren attempted that once; it ended in a fight he'd rather not repeat against beasts he couldn't possibly take on by himself if they always traveled in packs. They haven't been spotted since, luckily, but even Eren knows when he shouldn't be taking any chances. While his monster encounter hasn't been high, it's been plenty enough to know more than mere wild animals roam the lands. The waters, too.

Eren straightens himself when Erwin rises, absentminded tug on the reins causing the horse to whinny discontentedly. He pays it little mind, his gaze unmoving from the commander's own stare back at him. ]

It can get dangerous. There aren't any titans here, but there are different kinds of monsters to deal with.

[ a pause, considering, and then another nod, quick as the first. he looks around once more, taking in their surroundings as though, it could change. it could, is the thing, a fact that's sinking deeper into reflex daily. he wonders at it, the difference between titans and the assortment that they face here. not all of them rely on physicality, but Erwin still isn't sure which is more powerful, the glamour adopted by the fae, or the heady, wrenching fear that titans instill. he supposes that he'll find out one way or another in time. ]

My experience there is very limited, perhaps unfortunately. [ a droll expression, fleeting. ] Have you had any notable encounters in your time here, Eren?

[ The answer is easy: yeah, definitely. Perhaps it's because he's the type to rush ahead without a second thought, especially with no one to hold him back, but Eren has found it far too easy to trip into one thing or another. It isn't a place with little to do or see; that much is for certain.

Eren gives his own, slow nod in response. ]

A couple—once in this forest, but that was months ago. I haven't seen any of those things around since.

sorry about the delay, back to school this week and it was busier than I thought!

[ Eren is straightforward, and Erwin appreciates that. freed of the blissful ignorance behind the walls as he'd been long ago, he'd always seen the knots that bound and twisted their lives. it was different here, yes, but just as tangled. Erwin could move with and through that as he had to, but he preferred being able to cut straight to the point. ]

What exactly did you encounter? [ he's asking a lot of questions, and he doesn't like it. there's no shame in asking, in gathering information - and he's no stranger to feeling low on information. but he's used to knowing what's available, at least, and is left with a sense of catching up to do. ]
