I'll manage, thank you. [He'll make like an ostrich and hide!! wait] I'm a little more concerned to see the general inappropriateness of those abducted to fight these monarchs' war. [Does he sound dissenting? MAYBE A LITTLE he's mad because Emil's a baby how dare you send a baby to die]

[Baby can fight!!! Baby's other personality can anyway same thing.] I'm used to being pushed around but this is too much. Forcing other people to fight like this... It's just wrong! [Oh, right, what Aster left him about the Monarchs.] But, uhm... saying stuff like that isn't good around here.

[He tries to think of a good way to word it without giving away too much or scaring him.] Well... the monarchs just... think that they did a good thing for us.

Sword-fighting. But I'm not very good at it on my own yet. I only started so that I could protect Marta.

[Of course Aster is good at it but he feels weird bringing that up to strangers still.]

That seems a noble cause for learning to fight.

Oh, thank you, sir! [He can tell Harold means it, so he smiles.] But Marta isn't here, so... I have to protect myself so that I can get back to her. This place makes it complicated, though.

[There are a lot of ways to get information without giving any, and Finch happens to know that one of the simplest ways, if you're with someone who won't get wary, is to just keep asking questions and listen.]

Well, it's a war, but a lot of people have friends on either side. It's usually more relaxed than what you would think. Lately though, things have been... [Emil fidgets. He can't really explain everything but Harold seems to have understood his issue before, so.] ...We have to be loyal. That's all.

The demand for loyalty is one made by any nation in times of pressure. There is no surprise it is being made here. History has many examples of how the internal politics play out.

The principle applies to any system under stress. Place an area under pressure, and everything will be forced together. That which refuses to be pushed in line will by necessity be forced out. You can see it at work in any pressurized engine. [maybe but i'm not fact-checking for a test drive tag though]

In systems with humans, the process is invariably less palatable than in fluid dynamics.
