[The exact course of how things played out has never been clear to Dorian. Not even a hundred years later does he gain the clarity of sight to truly understand what happened, what was done to him. It is much more pleasant to focus on the cup of tea.]

[They smooth over, don't they? When you enjoy nice things, teas and cakes and pretty pictures. The broken pieces go under the surface, and you don't have to think about the cracks anymore.

At least, that is what his smile tries to say.]

[How is he supposed to answer to this? Dave has always complained about his own childhood, but the truth is, he didn't have it so bad. He doesn't know to say, words feel useless.]

...libraries and books really are the best sanctuaries, aren't they? [He can't say "I understand", that would be wrong. But he has an idea and he wants to offer that comfort.]

[Dorian's smile is as ready as ever. A painful history is one thing, and to be kept in the past. Particularly when the present moment offers so much. He does love books.] Truly, they are. I can't imagine much better company than a good book—or at least I couldn't, in those days.

That was before I had a B.F.F., after all.

I couldn't either. I spent most of my school days hidden in the library. Your brain is thankful for it at least. [Dorian is trying to keep it light and Dave will oblige, returning the smile. That last part makes it real after all.] And a BFF is there for you if you ever need... to talk. Or anything. And with tons of good book recommendations. [Stop him before his sappiness reaches 9000.]

As you seem to have noticed, I do enjoy a good book. [What is talking about things. Talking is hard?? Talking means coming to terms with what happened.

The book. [WHAT OTHER THING. THERE ARE NO OTHER THINGS.] I don't know why i used my own name, except that apparently telling the truth is the greatest fiction one can. But then, poor Dora. I don't know how she would make a good marriage after that novel went to press.
