I wouldn't really call the latter a "good gambit". Effective for the amount of time it was conceived in, perhaps, but otherwise a bit heavy-handed for my tastes.

But back home isn't here. These are not people you only just met recently.

Precisely so. The time to build up a rapport is simply not there.
