[It's hard for a person to believe in love when they're denied even the familial love that's supposed to be a given.]

I believe that everyone is motivated by something. Lust or money or power or whatever. Some may say they only want love, and perhaps they even believe it, but who actually acts on that? There's a reason why farm girls dream of being swept off their feet by a handsome prince and not by the village pauper.

-- But she will learn in time how she would have been happier with the pauper.

Would she? The pauper was likely himself motivated by her more secure financial situation or her good looks, after all.

And yet a whole continent has not taught the pauper that everything is his. Or that he is above the laws of man and gods.

The fact that there are varying degrees of decency doesn't make a less terrible man's actions any less selfish.
