"This fellow had not the red hair, the broad, fair-complexioned features that were most common to the men of Dalriada. Instead, the young warrior was long of face, dark of hair, a man of wiry, muscular build. He could almost have been one of their own save that his skin bore no evidence of the tattoist's needles and colors. Every seasoned fighter of the Priteni wore his battle marks with pride, alongside his signs of origin, the creatures and symbols that told his kinship. After the spring campaign both Bridei and Gartnait should have earned the first of the combat decorations for themselves. This man's skin bore no such patterns and that, as much as anything, marked him out as alien in this place.
For all his injury, which was bleeding steadily, the captive walked with purpose, eyes straight ahead, shoulders square. Bridei could not shake the sense that he himself was being assessed. If one grew up with a druid as a teacher, one learned to observe men subtly, to read the breath, to interpret the slightest change in the eye. It was the eyes of this man that were disconcerting above all. They were like the eyes of those killers in the Dark Mirror, the forces that had swept through the Vale of the Fallen, long ago, and taken all that lay in their path. Those eyes were devoid of both pity and hope; they saw only the task ahead of them and knew only the will to complete it. An army with such a look would be hard to withstand. It would, Bridei thought with a shiver, be near impossible to lead. Such men would fight without awareness of their own mortality. They would kill without the knowledge of their enemy's humanity. A fell force indeed."
For my PB for Faolan I have chosen Jamie Dornan's portayal of the Huntsman in Once Upon a Time, who is basically perfect for him. Faolan not very tall, not very short, not too handsome, but not too ugly either. He excels in knowing just the right way to be invisible in any crowd of people. His hair is brown and he keeps it cut short and out of his way. His eyes are dark and are probably the most expressive part of his face. He's only roughly 29 but he looks closer to 35. Life has been hard on him, but more likely that is for the fact that he rarely ever truly smiles, giving him a rather forbidding look. For the most part he is someone you would look over in a crowd. He isn't usually clean-shaven, nor does he generally grow a beard, but somewhere artistically in the middle of that.
In terms of scarring, Faolan has quite a lot from canon, including a nasty scar on his upper right arm (an old arrow wound), another in his upper left (another arrow wound, only a couple years old), around his wrists and ankles (shackles, so old they are barely noticable at this point), on his left shoulder (from wolves, pretty bad, only a couple years old), on his right knee (also from wolves, very bad, only a couple of years old, an injury that traveled deeper than just the skin that gives him trouble when he's on his feet for too long/when it rains/when he's too physical).
A random thing to note - in healing his hands from the jabberrot he's had to magically regenerate/regrow quite a lot of muscle and skin, so rather than having scarring from that, his hands and arms when he first recovered were as soft and smooth as a
lady'sman who's never seen a day of hard work in his life, and he's been working ever since on trying to build those back up.He also has a little blue star crudely tattooed behind his right ear, although this is usually hidden by his hair, which he keeps just long enough to cover it. Also, in the middle of his chest he bears the seal of the Seelie court, courtesy of Solais herself.
Fashion;
Faolan dresses practically for every occassion, though his outfits are meticulously chosen not to bring attention to him, for better or for worse. Therefore they generally change depending on where he is and what he is doing. He does wear a lot of leathers as they are more durable and similarly dark colors because they allow him to sneak around in the shadows more easily.
In the drabwurld Faolan wears a lot more jewelry than he used to, including a bone ring, a golden ring emblazoned with the symbol of a dagger trapped in a sun, and a plain black stud earring. He also wears a plain silver ring on a chord around his neck.
Demeanour;
"There was a perfect image of Faolan in her mind, correct in every detail: his strength, his kindness, his courage. His reticence; his wariness. Those things were the essence of the man."
Faolan is rather straightforward and to the point. There was a time when he stopped to appreciate the roses but that time in his life has passed, mostly. He is frequently described as being wary, reticent, perhaps a little forbidding. He is a private man who holds his cards close to his chest. He carries himself in such a way that speaks of a man with utmost control over everything he says and does, and for the most part that is the case. His eyes and the expressions they hold at times are perhaps the only true windows in, and even those are generally guarded. His posturing speaks of a cool confidence in himself and his abilities. He has a dry, wry sense of humor, is quick-witted, and at times can put his foot in it by being too honest or too blunt or too sharp, etc. He can school his expression into whatever he wants when need be, but for the most time speaking to someone he is watching and taking in everything they say and do, and every little thing they don't say and do, making note of it all, storing and sorting through the information as he goes. In a difficult moment he still keeps his expression mostly blank but one might be able to see the wheels turning a mile a minute in his head. He does a lot of eyebrow raising when he doesn't need to keep his cool, and a fair share of sighing as well. His true smile, when he does smile, is all the more sweet in its rarity.
Aural;
Faolan's speaking voice is mid-ranged but well-formed, his accent softly lilting Gaelic (just like Jamie Dornan's). He rarely raises his voice and instead chooses to use his sharp tongue and quick wit to cut an argument down fast. (Although that is not to say that he never raises his voice at all.) When he speaks, the words he chooses are usually business-like, not too formal but not too personable either. He does not make a habit of over-using honorifics, for example. He has learned to mimic other accents from his own to disguise his Gaelic identity with ease, and it stands to reason in a crunch he'd be able to mimic anyone's accent that he's heard enough of (assuming their translation system works like that).
Faolan's singing voice - for he was/is a bard and this is important - is soft, sweet, and resonant. He can and has made grown men cry through song before. He has an expert grasp on channeling the emotions of a piece, and excels especially with the more sorrowful ones.
Olfactory;
Faolan does not wear any special scents (it's harder to sneak around if you can smell him coming). Similarly he tries to keep himself relatively clean (by medieval standards especially), so that he doesn't stink (and so you don't smell him coming that way). For the most part he's pretty much just au naturale, though. Faolan's natural smell itself is a rather earthy and complex. He wears a lot of leathers so he generally smells like warm leather and a bit like sweat (those leathers can get warm sometimes), but not in a bad way. He spends a lot of time out of doors when he can so pine, autumn leaves, and fresh air are also smells to be associated with Faolan.
