TEST DRIVE MEME #7

TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping to EACHDRAIDH? Why not give the setting a test run here!

OPTIONAL SCENARIOS

01. ARRIVING IN THE DRABWURLD.
The Seelie and Unseelie courts welcome you not with mirthful revelry, this time around dear friends. There is a seriousness in the air, though the food is still hearty and the imps still mischievous. After you have been briefed on your purpose here, you will find an endless feast and a night filled with entertainment to placate your concerns. Mingle with new arrivals, sneak down the castle halls and make sure your eyes are always on your glass; fairies and imps have no bias when it comes to tricks!

02. THE STATION.
Looking for a little slice of home? The Station gives you all that and more. Take advantage of the wifi, have a cup of fairy-brewed coffee (the one they didn't spit in) or sit back and relax on the patio. You can even move your things into one of the available rooms!

03. WILDCARD.
Your own scenario! Explore the Drabwurld or simply take advantage of your Locket! Be mindful, though -- the monarchs are watching and cross court communication should be done with the utmost secrecy.

[This man is always drunk if he can help it.

Thankfully, this man is also quite flexible and thus quite amenable to being moved and prodded about. He eases off when Zack pushes at him, though this doesn't seem to help much. Upon being questioned, his brows raise and he reaches out to touch the man.

All along his face. And his shoulders. And his chest. And pretty much every part of his body, until he decides...]

Oh.

[...maybe this wasn't Diarmuid after all.

Gilgamesh flops onto his side, but remains curled close to Zack. He's comfortable. Why move?]

You're the spitting image of someone else I know. [Also:] Your behind looked similar from a distance. I refuse blame for it.
colorofthesky: (That's FIRST Class to you.)

[personal profile] colorofthesky 2015-05-08 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
[ Gilgamesh is lucky because, at this rate, Zack is going to need a drink.

Tensing up again as the man's hands move over his face, Zack has to clamp down on a very powerful, knee-jerk reaction when the stranger's fingers travel elsewhere. If he wasn't (apparently) drunk, Zack would have just let it loose and punched the man right in the face because this is super awkward, wow.

It's a good thing it's dark out because he's already turning red.

When Gilgamesh flops on his side, Zack very deliberately rolls away...and sits up!! He is not going to cuddle with some weird man he just met. ]

...right.

[ He should really walk away from this before it gets weirder, but - ]

Do you always greet people you know like that?

[personal profile] babbylon 2015-05-08 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
[What?! Gilgamesh very deliberately pouts at this development, but makes no attempt to pursue him. For now. He just yawns, and—also very deliberately—lets down his long braid of golden hair and bats his eyes with coquettish intent at Zack. He's flush from wine, yes, and craving company.

You're it for tonight, Zack. Enjoy him. At least he's easy enough to look at.]

I greet beautiful people like that. Hence why I assumed you for my beloved Knight.

[His expression evens out some, and he assesses Zack more seriously now. Tall, tan, muscular... then...]

You're a soldier, aren't you? You might say I'm drawn to that sort, so take it as a compliment.
colorofthesky: (Disbelieving eyes.)

[personal profile] colorofthesky 2015-05-08 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
[ ...you picked a tough nut to flirt with tonight, Gilgamesh. He isn't blind necessarily, to what you're doing. He just isn't interested - and preoccupied with other things.

He isn't rude enough to just walk away, so Zack sits and listens to the other, his expression mostly...perplexed. This isn't the sort of talk he usually hears. ]

...thank you?

[ What else can he say to that, really. As to the other question, well...it isn't good to answer in the past tense, is it? ]

Yes, I am.

[ His sword is even with him, in fact. ]

Are you?

[personal profile] babbylon 2015-05-08 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
[As if he doesn't find the unwilling morsels most enticing of all. But Gilgamesh has learned something of good behavior here, or at least better behavior, so makes no effort to pursue him beyond that. For now.

Gilgamesh's eyes wander to that sword. Every great blade has a great story to tell, and he wonders what this one might say.]

I'm a King. A King that rules all Heroes and watches over the battlefield from on high, the great Gilgamesh.

[Or used to, anyway. Don't ask him about that. Gilgamesh gestures to the night sky above them.]

Soldiers don't usually take time to admire the stars. Why you?
colorofthesky: (I'll spread my wings.)

[personal profile] colorofthesky 2015-05-08 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
[ The way Gilgamesh introduces himself makes Zack think if the fairy tales his mother used to tell him as a child. It piques his curiosity a little, and even if he doesn't trust this man, a little of the tension in his back and shoulders melt away.

He lets out a quiet hum. ]

We don't really have kings where I come from.

[ Rulers, perhaps, those in positions of authority, power-hungry companies that grind the rest of the world underfoot...but royalty? Not so much.

A King of Heroes, though... That is a statement if he ever heard one. He almost looks sad. ]

Heroes, either.

[ He glances up at the stars again, briefly, before looking once again at his strange, new companion. The answer is at once simple and complex. ]

Life seems less complicated when I look at the stars. I don't always find the answers I want down here so I figure the next best place to look is up there.

Even if they don't answer, I like that they're there.

[ Something peaceful and constant -- a rare thing for him, especially over the last few years. ]

[personal profile] babbylon 2015-05-08 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
[Already, Gilgamesh takes a liking to this man. He's earnest, speaks with fairness and straightforwardness, similar to Diarmuid himself. Maybe it was a less a case of mistaken identity and indeed, more being drawn to like kind. When he rolls closer this time, it's with a childish air rather than a suggestive one, so he can point upward and show Zack.]

That one disappears sometimes. And the one right beside it winks in and out on occasion, like it's waving hello.

[He sheds a few of those arrogant layers in favor of a softer demeanor. But only a few, as Gilgamesh ever remains himself.]

My people used them as guideposts on journeys through the desert. We believed that when we died, we'd make our way up there, and shine with the gods. They're there because they watch over us when no one else might listen, when nothing else might light the path.

[Gilgamesh sounds very, very fond all of a sudden. Stars held great meaning for him. And even if they don't answer, he likes that they're there, too.]
colorofthesky: (Victories yet to come.)

[personal profile] colorofthesky 2015-05-08 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
[ It's just how he is. He legitimately doesn't know how to be any other way, and so this is what happens.

He's half-expecting the lewdness again, but when Gilgamesh starts pointing out stars instead, he can't help but look. Zack has sought the counsel of the stars many times in the last several weeks, but it's been a long while since he's sat and watched them with someone else.

Zack listens, and after a moment, the fondness in the other's voice makes him smile a little despite himself. ]

I like that.

[ The idea of joining the stars... He's always wanted to fly.

He looks back down at his companion, and there's a soft smile there -- a genuine (if sheepish) one. ]

Thank you.

[personal profile] babbylon 2015-05-08 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
[Sheepish, indeed. Gilgamesh has to laugh.]

Oh? You're pretty shy, huh? That's alright.

[There will be others he can spend more intimate time with tonight. Questionable pursuits apparently forgotten, he looks to Zack with bright eyes that shine even in shadows. Deep and dark and a near hypnotic red that have dragged men and women alike to their deaths.

But they are warm and welcome now. Even a tyrant can act benevolent sometimes.]

You are a newcomer to the realm? I would've remembered a face such as yours. Tell me your name.
colorofthesky: (We'll never lose our way.)

[personal profile] colorofthesky 2015-05-08 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
[ Zack huffs a little despite himself. ]

Not all the time.

[ He's pretty bold with a sword in his hand, but they aren't exactly sparring at the moment, are they?

Zack stares back at those strange red eyes, his own a bright, clear blue. They might be fearsome to some (he can see why people might fear), but they seem almost familiar to him.

He's not afraid. ]

I just got here a little while ago, yeah. My name is Zack. Zack Fair.

[personal profile] babbylon 2015-05-08 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
Only right now.

[Gilgamesh will always tease back when given the chance, though he's less insistent with it than before. He props his head up on his hand, and calmness falls over them both; the warmth of his mana spreads between them, purposely, so that Zack might relax.

It's a high compliment from the King that he even bothers, but his whims are flighty, as he so proves with a surprisingly generous offer.]

If I can give you some answers beyond those stars, then ask them of me. I am the seer of the beginning, the middle, and the end. I have gazed into the deep, traveled far. I do know this realm. I will speak its secrets to you if you so desire, Zack Fair.
colorofthesky: (A marvelous discovery.)

[personal profile] colorofthesky 2015-05-08 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
[ He is starting to relax a bit more -- a surprise, after the abruptness of their initial meeting. In fact, he is almost tempted to lay back down.

For now, though, he stays where he is.

Gilgamesh's offer is indeed generous. He doesn't expect it, but he certainly does appreciate it.

Zack thinks for a moment before he decides what to ask. ]

Can you tell me a little about why we're here? The war I heard mentioned?

The fairies didn't tell me much when I got here.

[ Or they did tell him, and it's possible he doesn't remember. He was half dead at the time. ]

[personal profile] babbylon 2015-05-08 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
[A reasonable question to ask, and one he's given some degree of thought to himself. If only someone had been so considerate from the start with him, he grouses privately; if only someone had offered the truth in the midst of so many lies.

Gilgamesh flops onto his back and turns his eyes to the stars.]

A great Void encroaches upon this land. The Void shall swallow everything and everyone up in its wake, is it said, and the forces of Unseelie and Seelie squabble over how best to address it. Our Seelie would welcome this end, but the Unseelie...

[It's still hard to think of them as an enemy, even with the likes of Saber on the other side, even with all the battles he's fought. This still wasn't his war and he still resents being dragged into it, so he cannot rightfully hate his opponents as the King and Queen would have him do.

Briefly, he looks to Zack, gauging his reaction.]

The Unseelie would fight it. In either event, we are poised on the edge of apocalypse. That is the true meaning of this war.
colorofthesky: (The skies may turn against me.)

[personal profile] colorofthesky 2015-05-08 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[ A great Void.

Zack's brow knits, and he seems more...perplexed than anything else. The end of the world, as Gilgamesh describes it, is an abstract concept to him, in the same way that the Lifestream is. Something outside the scope of human understanding.

Granted, it also sounds a bit too fantastic to be real. Certainly, the world back home had to deal with its share of destructive forces, and AVALANCHE always claimed the Mako reactors would be the death of Gaia, but something like this...

Zack frowns. ]

Why would they welcome the end?

[personal profile] babbylon 2015-05-08 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Because endings are a natural part of life, Zack.

[Gilgamesh snaps to almost unusual seriousness with this reply. He doesn't necessarily agree with every aspect of the Seelie credo, but he does understand why the end must come. If not now, then eventually, and to delay the inevitable was nothing short of a fool's errand. He cannot agree with the Seelie in entirety, which means he can't agree with the Unseelie, either.

He also can't agree with an end to his own story quite yet—or ever—which leaves him at odds with just about everyone, forever the lonely king on the lonely path. Such was the cruel fate of Gilgamesh.]

Because the war they fight stretches across the world, across all worlds, including yours. And an ending to this one means the rebirth of many others. Like the death of a star, which releases its energy back into the universe, we restore balance with this cycle. It is simply the way of things.

colorofthesky: (Wishes all turned to ash.)

[personal profile] colorofthesky 2015-05-08 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[ The answer comes as a slap in the face.

Thought Gilgamesh's tone isn't necessarily harsh, as the other elaborates on the cycle of beginnings and endings, all Zack can think about is a battle fought on a rocky hill. Rain, gunfire, and cold water mixing with warm blood. He thinks about what it felt like to walk to his own demise with a smile on his face, acceptance of that end, because it felt like right time, like he was doing the right thing.

He fought, though. He struggled, showing the same ironclad determination that had gotten him through so many other situations in his life. Zack doesn't like the idea of simply accepting one's fate, even if it is a foregone conclusion.

The fate of every world may be at stake here, but to drag him away from his own part in this apparently all-important circle of life leaves a sour taste in his mouth.

His expression shutters, and just like that, the softness and curiosity that was there evaporates. He withdraws and looks away. ]

They should have left me where I was, then.

[ A soft statement. It may be foolish, but he feels cheated in some way he can't quite define.

Then- ]

What do most people do when they come here?

[ Do they fight? Do they leave? Do they try to hide from what's happening? He doesn't know what he wants to do yet, though perhaps he will once he's been here for a little while.

It's been a very long day. ]

[personal profile] babbylon 2015-05-09 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Struggle.

[That probably comes as a slap, too, but better Zack hear this now and deal with it now than find out the much harder way, living under his personal delusions. Gilgamesh has no desire to toy with this man, who seemed so sad sitting under the stars and seems sadder still reminiscing over what he's lost. A great deal, the great King imagines, and he's softened enough towards him to leave the matter alone.

Gilgamesh shifts onto his side and peers at Zack with an expression that borders on kind. Even if he doesn't press, he yet wonders about the story behind the sword and the soldier that wields it. About the scar on his cheek and what he meant when he said there are no heroes left on his world.

He reaches out again, and the tips of his fingers graze along his wrist, only just barely. As if to bring him back to reality, away from that place where he was, away from the truth of things and away from that crushing space he's withdrawn into.]

Struggle, then find their way. Fight. Don't fight. But do something. Otherwise...

[His fingers fall to the ground, and he frowns, deeply.]

You'll go mad.
colorofthesky: (Tales yet untold.)

[personal profile] colorofthesky 2015-05-09 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
[ It is another slap in the face, but one he almost expects. Struggling and fighting, making decisions he never wanted saddled with -- it's been so much a part of his life for the last several years, it was almost a relief to make that last choice. To stand before an enemy he couldn't defeat and go down fighting, with some semblance of honor intact.

Zack looks like he's about to curl in on himself even more, but that light touch forestalls it a bit. He doesn't pull away or act skittish this time; he just lets it be what it is.

Pulling himself together a little, he banishes what he can of the nightmares he doesn't speak of. His home and everything else he knows is far away from here. He has no choice but to adapt. ]

I'll find something.

[ He would be ashamed if he did not. ]

[personal profile] babbylon 2015-05-09 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
[Gilgamesh dares to smile in the face of it all.]

There's a man here you should meet. He goes by Diarmuid Ua Duibhne, and he serves as my Knight. I believe he may provide you a measure of guidance throughout your journey and might serve you in his own way.

[Because are things he cannot do for Zack, comforts he cannot provide. He's a tyrant and a monster of a man, even under the best of circumstances, but Zack requires a gentler hand, he can tell. He requires stability and as one already driven mad long before ever coming to this realm, Gilgamesh cannot ground him.

But the Knight who leashed a King, brought him back down to earth? Perhaps he'll fare better than Gilgamesh ever could.]

Seek him out when you've sorted yourself. He'll help you find what you're searching for. [Teasingly:] You truly are like twins. It's uncanny.
colorofthesky: (Disbelieving eyes.)

[personal profile] colorofthesky 2015-05-09 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
[ He doesn't really know what he needs, honestly. What happened back home was enough to process, and he spent so much time running in those last few months, he didn't have much room to slow down and really cope with it all. Adding a strange new war that would somehow influence all worlds was a bit much to add to the pile.

Stability and some sense of purpose will likely help in the long run, though.

Zack listens, and though he isn't entirely sure what to make of Gilgamesh's recommendation, he thinks the man means will in giving it. He makes a mental note of it -- the name, and the fact that the man he's supposed to look for is apparently is twin. ]

...I'll look for him.

[ When he's "sorted" as the other so delicately phrased it. Also, he can't really help but ask: ]

Are we that much alike?

[personal profile] babbylon 2015-05-09 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
He lives for his honor.

[Gilgamesh speaks without realizing the true depths of Zack's plight, without knowing how little honor meant to him now. Truthfully, it didn't mean much to him either, but most soldiers followed some form of code. Surely Zack isn't so different in this regard, though he suspects he'll keep to his secrets for a while longer.

That sword's huge, though. Some part of him covets it against better judgment.]

And he has no tongue for lies nor deceit. He means what he says and acts accordingly, and that is why I have placed my faith in him. He will never stray from his righteousness, even were it to bring about his undoing. Although...

[Gilgamesh leans a bit closer, paying particular attention to Zack's face.]

His eyes aren't so striking. I've not seen their equal in many years. So startlingly blue, as though stolen from the sky itself.
colorofthesky: (I don't like games.)

[personal profile] colorofthesky 2015-05-09 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
[ He lives for his honor.

The words strike at something deep inside him, and though he doesn't flinch, exactly, something flashes across his face. He does follow a code -- a code that was instilled in him by his teacher when he was young. A code he could never really strictly follow because of the company he worked for. An ideal he lived and died by.

He will never stray from his righteousness, even were it to bring about his undoing.

Gilgamesh is right in thinking they're alike. Honestly, he finds it a little disturbing.

Blinking once when the other leans in to get a better look at his eyes, Zack stares back at vivid red ones -- eyes that remind him of someone he used to know. He isn't sure how that makes him feel just yet but lets it go for now. ]

The glow comes from Mako.

[ That much was common knowledge back home so he doesn't mind sharing it. ]

All SOLDIERs have it.

[ A beat, then- ]

He sounds like a good man.

[personal profile] babbylon 2015-05-09 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
[...ah, one of those men, then. An experiment. Some wretched creature that defied God. Gilgamesh isn't inclined to pity Zack—or anyone else, for that matter—but it does fill in a few blanks. Beings that are made rather than born are often at odds with the world around them. Even if they began life as humans, they often ended up something else entirely.

Gilgamesh takes note of this Zack Fair, pledges the face and the name to memory. They'll run into each other again. He's sure of it.]

I'm a good king, so good men are drawn to me by nature. By my decree, all those in my employ shall be held in the highest regard.

[He announces it as though it were actual law. Mischief fleets across his face again, and when he smiles, it's full of teeth. When fingers skitter across Zack's cheek, they're warmer than they should be. It is both a welcome and a warning of what might happen if Zack lingers too long out here.]

Go back inside, soldier of the sky. Return to the revels. You will feel better with a few drinks in you. By order of the King, face the day anew tomorrow, and follow that path of righteousness. I eagerly await your progress.
colorofthesky: (When angels become devils.)

[personal profile] colorofthesky 2015-05-11 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
[ If only Gilgamesh knew how true it was -- how madness had claimed three of the best and brightest of SOLDIER and made them into monsters. It's not a story Zack will share, now or anytime soon, and especially not with a stranger, but for himself, Zack has clung to his own humanity. It's one of the few things he can still consider his own after everything he's lost.

He takes what Gilgamesh says with a grain of salt (Zack doesn't know anything about kings or what makes a good ones outside fairy tales he heard as a child), but he does, at least, make up his mind to meet this Diarmuid the other spoke of.

Zack stiffens a little when those fingers drift over his cheek, and if nothing else, that convinces him more than anything else it's time to pull away.

Snagging the hilt of the Buster, Zack rises and returns the blade to its place at his back in a smooth, singular motion. He really isn't the mood for more of the revelry, but a drink or two might not be such a bad thing before he comes back out to stargaze.

He's not really sure he wants to say this (he doesn't quite know what to think of Gilgamesh yet), but he thinks he should say something. ]

...some other time, then.

[personal profile] babbylon 2015-05-11 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
[Gilgamesh rises with him, as if he means to follow, but passes by instead. As he does so, the air whips up around his figure, his mana expands, and his casual clothing disappears outright, replaced by golden armor that could put even a SOLDIER's to shame. He looks every bit the King he claims to be now, speaks with the authority of a true liege.

It can no longer that be doubted that in another place, another time, Gilgamesh indeed ruled over his people and occupied a mighty throne. He ruled and he commanded them, as he commands Zack now, holding to the utmost faith they will see each other again.]

Walk with pride. And know that you have been noticed by me, the great Gilgamesh.

[Gilgamesh retreats inside, or else would have, if he hadn't simply disappeared in a golden cloud of magic.]
