And yet, if we lose it they won't help us, either. It would seem that they're intent on keeping us here.

Pretty much. You go from king to pawn in a single day. Kind of sucks, doesn't it?

You are here. There's two kings and two queens already in play and we're the little pieces moved around the chessboard. Unless you get yourself a rank up to a back piece, you, my little millennial, are a pawn.

For now, at least. If you've got some kind of ambition, maybe you could change it.

[He smiles, but it's the type of smile one gives when they're getting angry but still want to seem above it all.]

If they want my aid and expertise at all, they'll need to treat me much better than a mere pawn. I've owned worlds larger and better than this one, if that's worth nothing to them, they shouldn't have brought me.

The sooner you realize that what you used to do has about as much bearing as a gnat's lifespan to them, the better off you'll be.

[He scoffs.] Nothing I can accomplish here will equal what I've already done. If they demand I prove myself in person, they're fools.

Please call them that to their face. I haven't had nearly enough entertainment lately.

You're going to have to do something. Sitting around on your ass isn't going to get you far.

And what exactly do they expect me to do here, then? I fail to see how I can partake in interplanetary negotiations when I'm stuck on a world that - correct me if I'm wrong - lacks even the most basic forms of space travel.

They expect you to fight. Or die. Or maybe both. But you'll have to make yourself useful here.

Yep he's really, really old and never bothered to learn how to fight.]

Then learn. Or figure out something else to do that isn't lounging around and avoiding things. Or don't. I'm sure they'll find something for you to do if you stand out for lack of actually doing anything.

I can do plenty. More than most here, I'd imagine.

Combat happens to be my weak point, but wars need strategists and negotiators, not merely infantry.

Look at that, you're starting to get the picture already. So find a place to sing up and make yourself useful before someone decides you're taking too long and shoves a sword in your hand before throwing you out into the front lines.

And here I thought my previous credentials would be ignored. Would they trust an unproven negotiator?

They might be. They're fickle, these little fairy folk. And they might not. Maybe they'll make you jump through some hoops first. Have fun with that.

It seems rather inconvenient, when they knew me well enough to abduct me. All of this jumping through hoops, as you say, seems as if it would only delay the task at hand.

[But he is used to bureaucracy. Sometimes administration is inconvenient.]

Ah, see. That's where you're wrong. They don't know you. They didn't abduct you. They abducted the meat suit the shard happens to be stuck in. You could be a goat and they wouldn't really care. Trust me, there's more than a few non-humans dragged in here. Kids, too.

That all seems like a rather inefficient way to build an army, bringing us here with nothing and leaving us to sort ourselves out.

[He ponders for a moment.]

Is there no administration building or head office to keep track of us?

Do they look like the bureaucratic types to you? That and there isn't much in the way of technology here, in case you haven't noticed. Outside the Station ring, nothing works. Sure, they could use magic... but why bother?
