The network can be accessed by any Shardbearer with a locket or shardless characters with enchanted devices, and is a quick way to meet new people and discuss the state of the world. 03. WILDCARD. trying to swallow down the giddiness of gansey being here. )
Yeah, Lynch-Ronan –
( exhale. get a handle on things. )
I'm not going anywhere, slow down. Are you okay?
no subject
( he's on the move but ronan has not told him where he is yet. he stops. )
Where am I going? Ronan, tell me where you are before I get lost.
no subject
( and he tells gansey where he his. )
– don't get lost.
no subject
( okay, it's a little far, and he gets there a little out of breath, but that's not because he was running or anything. )
Ronan!
no subject
does he tell gansey about time, that he took too long? ronan had begun to drill
it into himself that he was without his friends, without gansey especially, and suddenly
he can't really joke about it, not now he's faced with him.
he flings his arms around gansey's shoulders, a little awkwardly,
fists bunching at his back, and opts for saying nothing. )
no subject
Hey. It's good to see you.
no subject
they don't hug often. it's not – them. they've never had to rely on physicality
to get through their friendship. gansey would often be in the next room over whilst
ronan sat with the door shut, and it was enough to just know that if he stepped out
gansey would be there with his notebooks or working on his scale model of their
town. he steps back, scratches his collarbone awkwardly, exhales. )
– when did you get here? And how did you not have a pen with you?
no subject
Not very long ago. They didn't know if any of you would be here, I kept asking.
( masking his worry with an awe and fascination for the place worked until he had time to think. he'd done his best not to. )
And I did have a pen! ( the story of how he lost said pen could have been funny or adventurous, but it's not. a sheepish expression flickers on his face, and then is gone. ) I lost it in high grass. Or maybe something stole it, I'm still not entirely sure.
no subject
ronan's grin is lopsided. as always, exposed teeth make him look like something
dangerous – like a shark or a wolf – but if you know him, and gansey does (better
than anyone), there is a warmth buried beneath it. )
Maybe something made you lose it.
( he shakes his head. )
This place - it's like someone took Cabeswater and made it into a nation.
no subject
It is. It's much vaster than I thought at first, too.
( he's not yet thinking about distances between them, simply about the scope of the place and all the nooks and crannies that might be hiding some delightful trick, some new critter or plant with magical properties. )
no subject
You know how it's not like Cabeswater?
( his voice drops a little, eyes returning to gansey's face, lips pursing. )
I can't dream here.
no subject
( that snaps all of gansey's attention on ronan. his first reaction is concern for ronan, remembering that night in the church and the (at the time) innocuous sounding i can't dream explanation for his disappearance and the smell of alcohol on him.
then his mind is rushing to make connections, trying to connect dots in order to find an explanation and maybe a solution. something concrete that could help ronan, something solid to focus on to fix if it's a problem they can solve. )
Maybe you need Cabeswater and it's too far. Maybe we're on a different ley line.
( but that's not much, not yet. gansey makes a note to look into this, and wants to reassure ronan. )
We can figure it out and fix it.
no subject
( he decides against bringing up his fear that leaving their world, their time, their ley line is something like dying: that his dream constructs - including his little brother - might fall into a deep sleep without him there. ronan has made himself into a haven of secrets since childhood, secrets even from his best friend; he hasn't told gansey about matthew.
so as to fixing it, ronan just provides a decidedly unhelpful derisive snort, like, sure we will. )
D'you think there's any Glendower-relevant shit here?
no subject
We will, Ronan. I think there are, it's what I'm trying to find out. What I needed a pen for.
no subject
Yeah, hold on.
( he shrugs his bag off his shoulder. opens it, digging deep into the bottom. what? he had his schoolbag on him when all this world-shifting shit happened. it's tattier than it already was, already bearing the marks of the drabwurld's idea of adventure. he sniffs and holds something out to gansey. )
Don't let faeries steal this shit.
( it's a workbook and ronan's pencil case, full of pens. the workbook is well-used and filled mostly with ronan's latin notes, but it's got plenty of room left for when gansey runs out of room in whatever he's writing in now. )
no subject
I won't.
( out of the question. they're a gift, and that makes them something non-disposable or replaceable. )
Thank you, Ronan. ( then, with a tiny smile: ) I won't be running out of ink any time soon.
no subject
it's a box of epipens. a secret, albeit a little one, laid bare. one of many boxes that he's dreamed up and stashed around. )
I know you won't have any of these with you.
( he opens it – it's a two-box – and tips one into his hands. holds it out to gansey. there's a grim look on his face that begs gansey not to ask why ronan is carrying epipens around with him. )
Don't lose this, either.
