[the station hasn't ever been a huge draw for him here. even having grown up in new rome where things aren't all that different from the normal world once you get past the lares and fauns and whatnot, he's spent too much of his life as a demigod soldier to really crave the comforts of the modern world. much, anyway. he does miss good brownies.

the point is, it's a stroke of luck that he's there at all, and he almost passes hazel by with her turned away to face the computer like that. only a glimpse from the corner of his eye gives jason pause, and then he's stopped behind her, leaning down to look over her shoulder at the blank screen and see her face reflected in it.]

Hazel?

i'm starting to think you might be excited.

[The instinct to glance up at her own name was so strong, it never dawned on her that it could just as easily have been somebody calling to a different Hazel.]

[Except. No. Wait. That was--]

Jason?

[Forget the Coffee and forget the Computer. Definitely forget the computer. This was her former praetor and current friend.]

You have no idea how happy I am to see you right now.

[A pause. She looked as if she was about to run up and hug him at any given moment. It wouldn't be the first time.]

[if his expression of relief is anything to go by, he certainly wouldn't object to that. hell, he could almost just scoop her up himself. he's been trying to hold the most ragtag group possible together, and a sane, friendly face he actually knows well is a very welcome sight.]

Same. This place has been a little...uh. Yeah. [let's not get into the killer worms or clarisse trying to kill luke or anything just yet.] Did you just get here now? Please tell me you haven't been wandering around alone for a while with the rest of us all hanging out back at the castle.

Only if you tell me that the others haven't been hanging out at the castle while I've been wandering around alone this whole time.

[Actually, it wasn't that long. Maybe an hour, at most. But that was an hour without her friends and family besides her, and considering how long a time she had been spending with the majority of them...]

[She'd gotten bored, okay? Blame the ADHD.]

Nico too, or just Frank and the others?

No, the others aren't here. At least, not the rest of the Seven. Nico is, though. [which you'll no doubt be happy to hear. and yeah, thank the gods that the first prophecyfriend he gets here is the one that definitely likes nico.] And there are three other demigods here -- or, two and a half, kinda -- but they're all from the Greek camp so I don't think you'd know them. A sister of Frank's on the Ares side, a son of Hermes, and an otherwise-mortal Oracle of Delphi.

[Her face fell almost immediately. No Frank. No Percy or Annabeth. No Leo.]

[...and also no Piper. Which meant Jason understood exactly her current thought process. If anything, he must have been going through even worse. Because Nico was still here. Her brother. Family.]

[She took a moment to swallow the rest of her fears for the moment, and put on a bright smile for him.]

The fact that you're saying all this like it's good news means their Oracle is nothing like Octavian and these are a group of Greek who currently don't want to kill us.

[A genuine concern for them, given recent events.]

Sounds great. When do I get to meet them?

[no piper and no leo. and no thalia. and rachel is nice but he doesn't know her very well, and clarisse is terrifying. it's a good thing he's been very determinedly befriending nico and luke or he'd be feeling extremely solitary by now.]

Nah, they're fine. I mean, Rachel is a bit quirky and Clarisse kinda wants to kill everyone, but they're all on our side.

[he at least manages a smile in return. ever optimistic, this one.]

You can meet everyone as soon as we get them all together again.

[She could do with a bit of optimism right then.]

It's a child of Ares thing. The war kids are a lot less disciplined and dutiful on the Greek side.

[at least hazel will probably get off easy. as far as he's seen, clarisse is a bit nicer to other girls.]

No idea when, really. Getting everyone together these days is kind of like herding cats.

[Given Hazel's history with cats...or, really, any animal besides horses...that was a mental image, right there.]

I'm sure it can't be that bad.

Unless she actually does scratch you in the face.

[Hey, Child of Aries. Less dutiful, more bloodlust. Hazel wouldn't rule anything out until she had a chance to meet the girl in person.]

I'm pretty sure she'll only go after Luke for that. They, uh, have a history.

[the sheepish delivery of that explanation and the way he shoves his hands deep into his pockets and hunches his shoulders slightly really do no justice for just what kind of a "history" that is.]

She's fine, I swear. We've been here for months and Nico's the only one who's actually punched me in the face.

[Hazel was no Aphrodite...and, no offense to Piper, but she was incredibly thankful for that...but she was a teenaged girl. And some things translated through the decades.]

...Nico punched you in the face?

[But gossip would have to come later. For now, she was too busy looking incredibly shocked.]

[to be fair, while there apparently are some old one-sided feelings there that probably made things worse, the history's less about love and more about luke stabbing everyone in the back. but it's okay, he's cool now.]

Yeah. It was an accident. I kinda...startled him.

[from a really nasty nightmare. but he's not about to give hazel cause to worry about nico (and tell her about something nico probably wants kept secret) unnecessarily.]

[Hey, she was merely an anachronistic, teenaged demigod. Not a mind reader.]

Is he alright?

[It might have seemed a little rude to ask more about Nico's well being, rather than Jasons. But Jason was in front of her now. He was alive. He was conscious--something far more worth noting than some might realize--and he didn't seem all that worse for the wear.]

He's fine. [physically.] Don't worry, we've been looking out for him.

...thank you, Jason. [She looked very visibly relieved.] I'm glad he has someone. Nico's usually so alone. I worry.

[is that a flicker of concern on his face? nah, no letting either of their moods get ruined. clearly it was nothing.]

Besides, he's the only person here I can spar with and really go all out on.

That's kind of surprising, considering he never trained the way we did.

Yeah, but it's not like we really had anyone to teach us all the special abilities stuff, right? Not really a lot of children of the Big Three around to train younger generations. He figured all his stuff pretty much on his own and with some ghosts, in just a few years. That's pretty impressive.

[if you didn't get the memo, jason's decided that nico is now his Friend and that means the kid is now stuck with all the undying loyalty of a golden retriever.]

[She had been getting better in the last few weeks, but it would never compare to the boy who had such control over Death that he was literally able to bring his half sister back from the Fields of Asphodel. Something which Hazel would forever be grateful for.]
