[ Spoken with a wealth of conviction behind the single soft word, his emphasis angles to be heartening. Eyes on Bilbo, Thranduil's hard edges ease. ]
Until such a time, you are not alone here.

He gives Thranduil a soft smile. It's true he worries about how he can survive this war long enough to be able to return home. He isn't a fighter, but the thought of hiding behind others for protection doesn't sit well with him and he banishes the mere idea of it. He'll do his best to live or die trying.
Suddenly he perks up, reaching for his map.] Oh! I- I don't know if you saw this, but... [He holds out the parchment for Thranduil to see, pointing at an area labeled as "The Great Greenwood".]
It's the only place on this map that looks familiar to me. However I don't know who [or what] lives there. Not yet anyways. [Because he has every intention of finding the library in this lousy palace.]

Many years ago, you confessed to me that you had shared the halls of my home in the Greenwood of Rhovanion, in Ennor. Without my leave, but later with my blessing. [ How sad, he thinks, if this land has stymied those memories. ] Do you not know me, Bilbo Baggins? I, who named you elf-friend for your valour?

Before this moment we had never spoken... personally. [Familiar dread begins to settle in the pit of his stomach.] The last I recall is the dragon, Smaug flying towards... towards Laketown. [He knows he just guaranteed the deaths of hundreds not even moments before his arrival here.
He looks back up at Thranduil with a sincerely saddened expression.] I'm sorry. I don't remember anything past that.

[ And unsettling, but not Bilbo's fault in the slightest. He sighs somewhat for show, and offers the same smile as before. ]
I am Thranduil, Elvenking of Taur e-Ndaedelos which was Mirkwood in the Common Tongue, before its renaming to Eryn Lasgalen. [ Smaug? That long, and it cannot help him to reveal the nature of his quest's ending ...] It has been many years since last I spoke with you or the company of dwarves you travelled with, Master Baggins.
