[ He has witnessed the coming of Glaurung's brood, seen beasts of terrifying countenance slice through the sky and blot out the sun, knows of tales where scaled monsters sweetly coaxed noble hearts to their doom — and not once has he ever heard about any of them pardoning themselves to get a snack. Staring after her wide-eyed, his defenses are raised when the Voice of a young girl resonates in his mind, the invasion such a casual thing that Thranduil cannot fully feel at ease with it (even though, he supposes as he watches the creature devour a roast bird whole, it is better to be warned of its coming than not). ]

You are excused. [ Fascinated, wary, grey eyes sweep over her. ] Though I think it impossible for anyone not to grant you a pardon, if you strongly desired one.

[She has to toss it into the air and snap it up into the back of her beak. It slides as a visible bulge down her long neck. Janine studies him back, feeling his wariness as wariness of her own. She can feel emotions - they always feel like hers, though - but not hear thoughts.]

:Really? I could get away with things, huh?:

[There is grease on her beak. It gleams as Janine fights self-consciousness. It's always better to seem aloof and unaffected, she's found.]

:Seems like a lot of effort. Relax. You're too big to look like food, and you talk, anyway. I only ever attack anything if I have to eat it. Or it's going to hurt someone that does talk.:

[...she could eat an animal Thranduil's size, but she'd have to laboriously tear it apart first.]

[ Whether she is part of this court or not, he isn't about to shake thousands of years' worth of caution right away. Definitely won't be commenting on the look of her. ]

How is it that I hear you in my mind?

[ That, more than anything, is a disturbance. ]
pterosaur: (⅋Many people do.)

[Janine draws her head back a little.]

:Most people don't notice. All right. The 'how' I'm not sure about. A thing happened, two weeks ago.: [she... does not want to spill all to a strange adult.] :Now my essence isn't like normal. It doesn't fit my body, so it leaks. I think.:

:As for why, I can't talk otherwise.: [When she speaks there is usually an underlayer of soft croaks and caws. For a moment she she just makes a few of those noises.] :Very hard to get understood like that.:

I imagine so.

[ How unnerving, to think the essence of anything might bleed and touch his own fea. ]

What is your name?
pterosaur: (⅋Joy has gone the way it came.)

[personal profile] pterosaur 2014-03-16 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[Her natural suspicion of people has been fighting the effect of that fea. Janine has had her trust betrayed too many times to just give it over now. She will be friendly, in a casual way, but it will not go farther.]

:Janine. Janine Farehouse.:

[She remembers, then, that her plan had been to stop using the name she was born with. Oops.]

:I'll answer to other things too. Haven't come up with anything better yet.:
