I understand, Miss Cress.

[And she does, even if she's bred for balls. Putting yourself out there can be hard sometimes, and Cress seems so uncomfortable. Elizabeth wishes she had her seamstress Nina at the ready - Make her something lovely! she'd say. But she can't help with that part, not right now.]

I'm all right, thank you. [Mostly.] What about yourself? Forgive me, but you don't seem very at ease.

[Well, of course not, Lizzie. No one would be at ease at a time like this. She's good at coming off as oblivious, though, so she can't help but say it.]

[ cress' initial response is a short, breathless laugh, that seems to be lacking all forms of mirth. it's more nervous than anything, a sort of knee-jerk reaction when she's finding words difficult to gather up. ]

I've never really been at a party like this before. [ or ever.

she wants to say more, to say that it's been seven years since she's had any real contact with people, with anybody; that it's been seven years since she's seen a room so big, so bright and full of energy; that she isn't sure how she got here, or why she's here, or where here is in the first place; that she's thankful she's no longer trapped up there in her tiny satellite, but stars did her gratitude not ease her worries about this situation any less.

but instead, all she says is: ]
It's all so... loud.

I like parties, [Elizabeth admits,] but I can't say I care for this one. I think it would be overwhelming to anyone, even a seasoned party-goer. [Such as herself, ahem.]

I'm Elizabeth, by the way. But please, call me Lizzie. I think this has been a big day for everyone involved. Don't chastise yourself for feeling out of place, all right? I feel out of place, too. I feel... I feel... Well, I might as well come out and say it, even if it's poor manners to do so: I'm cross about it! That's how I feel.
