[She's puzzled more than startled, for his crown had given some warning of his status. But that did not altogether make sense with the flash of familiarity he had. Maybe it was a mistake, but it was odd.]

Elvenking, you say. I had thought I knew all those who claimed that title, by name if not by face. But I have stayed very near to my home all my life, and I suppose it is not surprising that the king of a land I have never heard of should be unfamiliar to me. You must forgive me my ignorance and educate me, if you can.

[She smiles more at his smile, but is more surprised at his words. Maybe she does know him.]

Yes, I am she - but as we have never met, allow me to introduce myself properly. I am Lúthien, the daughter of Elu Thingol and Melian. I confess I am not sure how it is you know me when I have not heard of you, sir.

[She inclines her head and sinks into a small, neat bow. Not too deep, for she was the daughter of a king, but as a king himself he would demand some respect.]

[ But I have stayed very near to my home all my life. It is upon hearing that he decides to hold the wealth of too many events, in the interim of her life ending until he received his father's crown, to himself. He can hardly imagine how he would phrase them, in any case, and to lay more cares on her shoulders than she will undoubtedly find herself burdened with is beyond him. ]

You show me no ignorance, I assure you. [ Looking to be in the flower of health as she is, his own bow is of a similar nature, respectful within their ranks. Of no great noble line is he, an Elvenking of necessity, but all the same deserving of what he has earned the right to call his over the long and arduous years. ] Menegroth was my home. I was but a humble huntsman in my youth, my Lady, who served your father in Doriath gladly.

[That statement only serves to confuse her further.]

And you left, it seems. But here is another reason I would have thought to know you.

I did not speak with you. I could not have known your mind, even if you had wished me to.

[ He's not altogether convinced his younger self wouldn't have smacked his forehead off the ground, so quick would he have been to bow to her and get his muddy cloak out of the way. ]

Nonetheless, King Thranduil, it seems strange to me that a former subject of my father would remain unknown to him and therefore me after having risen to such prominence.

[She's studying him a little shrewdly now - sheltered, yes, stupid, no.]

[ If only he could explain everything in a neat little book, hand it to her and not have to feel guilty about the incredible events he is certain she has yet to encounter. ]

You assume I travelled only a little way, my Lady, when the truth of the matter is that great mountain-ranges were crossed in succession. To the far off east from Beleriand lies Rhovanion and that is where we settled. I concede we are secluded, more so than many of our kin.

[ Not a direct lie, at least, that goes toward helping explain away the inconsistencies she has noticed. ]

As you said, you have stayed close to your home all your life. It grieves me to say that no word has ever been sent to Menegroth from my halls.

[ Now that is resoundingly true. ]

[Something about this situation is still reading slightly off to her, but she can't put her finger on it, and so sets the feeling to the side for now.]

I am flattered, then, that you remember me as you do. For to cross so great a distance and then rule long years, you must have left Doriath long ago.

[Which also leads to the question of why he'd left. Rare was the elf who left without being exiled, after all. Perhaps that was why he traveled so far, and why something about what he says seems...

She's still not sure.

But her eyes are slightly more wary than they had been as she looks at him.]
