Oh, of course. If this is a different world it stands to reason that it has it's own language. I wonder if there's some way to learn it or study it...

[ She looks over the maps again before she reaches into her bag, tugging out a notepad - at least she'd been able to bring that from home. She purses her lips, starting to write down all the names for research later. ]

Do you think you could tell me more about the language of your world?
firith: (datura ·)

[personal profile] firith 2014-03-16 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
There are many. The languages of Middle-Earth are as rife as blades of grass. In the Woodland Realm we speak Sindarin, as do the elves away south and far to the west over the Misty Mountains. Men have always invented a great many tongues and I have not studied Dwarvish runes in all my years. [ A pause. ] Of Orkish and the Black Speech, I will say no more than to name them thus.

[ Gently, he probes back by asking, ] What of your world, Miss Granger? It appears that here, at least, we all share the common speech.

Sindarin, Dwarvish Runes, Orkish and Black Speech. [ Runes, at least, she's familiar with, though she can't really say anything about Dwarven Runes. Perhaps they share a similarity with Ancient Runes, but she doesn't really have anything with her she can offer to compare. Looking over at the map again, she pauses to take a few more notes before she looks over and offers a soft smile. ]

I wonder if it's magic that's helping us? Because I've never heard of Sindarin. In my world there are dozens of languages spoken by humans and then the languages of all the other races as well, though they're not as widely studied.

We are of the same mind in this matter. Sorcery is not commonly a pleasant affair, from whence I hail, but there are aspects of what amount to 'magic' that fall within the ability of the elves. A penchant for a theme of power, after a sort.

[ It is ... difficult to explain, and he pauses while she takes that much in. ]

Really? [ She sits up, taking an even deeper interest now. ] Magic, in my world, is normal. We have schools to teach children and a whole society built on it. [ She is almost ridiculously interested in what he has to say and she leans forward a little. ] Magic does give power, of course, but when you're in a world where the people around you all, generally, have magic it loses a lot of that focus.

[ Schools to teach children and a whole society built on it. He remains just as invested and fascinated as Hermione, having never heard of such a thing (at least, not to any positive outcome when first Morgoth and then Sauron corrupted the world with their own brand). ]

With elves, it is different. Just as one man may be a faster runner, another could be a great weaver. I own an encompassing art whereby once the doors of my kingdom are shut then, if I will it, none can open them from within or without. A protective spell, one without words.

You speak of magic as though any might use it to different purposes, not only wizards.

That sounds simply amazing. I know of a lot of protection spells, but nothing quite so grand or all encompassing - at least, nothing I've actually seen put into practice without a group of people to lend their powers. [ There's a sudden burst of respect bubbling inside of her and she turns in her chair to look at him properly. Someone as powerful as that must be someone important, surely, and she's startlingly reminded of Albus Dumbledore.

Just in a little less of an irritated nostalgic way, she supposes. ]

In my world, or where I come from, there are those born with magic and those without. Some are stronger than others or have aptitude for certain aspects of magics rather than others, but in the magical society we're all supposedly equal. We can use magic to summon things, create lights, unlock, lock, brew potions - almost anything you can think of.

[ He meets her gaze and accepts the praise without argument, not because of ego but simply for the sake of having good manners. ]

Your world sounds like it schools the wizards themselves. The Istari are five, great is their power and mysterious their ways. I have spoken much with Gandalf the Grey, who is a friend to all elves, Radagast the Brown dwells in the great forest where I rule and the two Blue have since been lost to the land in secret. Saruman the White is the highest of their order.

Does your magic remain with you in Allaidh Darach?

Wizards are limited in your world, then? At least, people known as wizards? There are millions of them in my world - anyone born with magical powers are known as either a witch or a wizard, dependent on their gender.

[ She nods, though, lighting up and tugging her wand out of her sleeve. ]

I've tried a few things and it seems to be working as well as it did at home. I haven't really had a go at anything huge yet, though.

Five. No more, no less.

[ Sauron doesn't count because Sauron. The wand draws his focus, a small smile playing on his lips. ]

I know little of the magic of wizards, even less of witches, but would a staff not suit your purposes better?

That's... Kind of amazing. They must all be particularly powerful, then.

[ Yeah he's the most gross iF ONLY VOLDEMORT DIDN'T COUNT. She brightens, shifting forward so he can see. ]

It's a little cumbersome, I think. Wands are far more... Special, in my world. They have magic all of their own and it's said that the wand chooses the wizard. That's why all magical people have a special bond with their wands.

[ He can believe that. Staffs, wands; it seems every magically inclined person has something of the sort and though Hermione clearly isn't of the same race as the Maiar, there are still comparisons to be drawn. ]

My heart is gladdened for you, that you have been allowed to keep yours close.

Thank you. [ She looks over at her wand before she glances back at Thranduil almost shyly. ] Would you like to see how it works? It won't do any harm, I promise.
