[Ben wasn’t the only one trying to find a way out, or at the very least, trying to put some distance between himself and all that madness of a feast. Though he hadn’t strayed too far from the great hall, Javik already found this place difficult to navigate. If he’d thought frigates like the Normandy had too much wasted space and a nonsensical design, this place was going to drive him right up the wall.

He kept his hands straight at his sides, finding that there was more than enough to offend his sense of smell and sight. Opening himself up to reading the history of this place through his sensory ability would just be too much. He was still seething over the fact he was even here, leaving an even worse scowl on his face than usual.

Prowling the halls, Javik was hard to miss in his bright red armor. Four eyes combed over every last detail around him, but settled on Ben when he came into sight. Javik couldn’t tell if his clothes made him native or not, since most humans he saw were in full combat gear. The man didn’t appear intoxicated at least, meaning it was possible he’d have a coherent answer about this place. Any one of the imps around could serve that purpose, but he’d rather ask something he could recognize.]

Human. Are you familiar with this place?
rube: (four)

[personal profile] rube 2014-03-26 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
[ben had been too distracted by his own thoughts and mere confusion to really be paying attention to the people around him. there are people roaming here and there, but they aren't people that he wants to speak to. they are all in the same boat, as far as he's concerned, and it's what makes him continue on through the halls for an answer.

as soon as someone addresses him, ben turns around, expecting a man, and instead finding -- well, he isn't too sure what's standing in front of him. his mouth falls open and his brows twist together in a mix of awe and surprise, lips tugging down into a frown as he takes in the thing's appearance.

he's quiet for a moment before he decides to speak,]

What in the hell are you?

[a little rude. oops.]
notavirtue: (deal with it)

[personal profile] notavirtue 2014-03-26 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
[Javik waited for the words to come, though it was far from patient as his expression gradually darkened. It wasn't the first time someone had looked at him like that, or even asked him that question, but it was no less annoying. What did it matter what he was? Half of the people back home didn't even believe him, anyways.]

I am prothean. [He crossed his arms over his chest.] Answer my question.

[Rude is only the beginning, it seems.]
rube: (twelve)

[personal profile] rube 2014-03-26 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
[ben eyes the 'prothean' silently, cants his head to the side, and seemingly accepts it. there's not really anything he himself can do about it, and coming from a carnival, he's seen his fair share of weird. hell, he's got a few weird tricks up his sleeve, too.]

Don't got any answers for you, sir.

[he spares a glance over his shoulder, letting out a small, frustrated sigh.]

Nothin' personal, but I got places I need to be.

[he takes a hesitant step back, but he has a feeling the guy'll probably throw a few more questions at him before letting him go.]
notavirtue: (excuse you primitve)

[personal profile] notavirtue 2014-03-26 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
[Javik stared right back, as if daring him to question that he was a prothean. Thus far the only species he knew here were the humans, and none of them seemed to share origins with him. Their clothes were wrong, their scent was off and everything about this place just rubbed him the wrong way. In all fairness, he'd probably been expecting too much from the human. At least he was used to disappointment as a fact of life.

Javik followed Ben's line of sight, focusing back on him when he saw nothing behind the man. The corner of his lip twitched in agitation at the attempt to get away from him.]

I believe that is a lie, human. If you are not familiar with this place, then where are you going?
rube: (eleven)

[personal profile] rube 2014-03-26 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
[ben is definitely a little put-off by that, and it shows. he crosses his arms, brows furrowing. he's feeling a little edgy, if not impatient, with how things are going around the building. not knowing where he is or what's going on is making him less patient than usual, and he doesn't want to put up with the guy's pressing questions.]

Stop that, I got a name- it's Ben Hawkins.

[a beat,]

And I don't lie. I gotta find answers, and that ballroom there don't got nothing for me.
notavirtue: (we thought YOU would)

[personal profile] notavirtue 2014-03-26 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
[Javik wouldn't be correcting what he called Ben anytime soon, but he would at least lay off in the interest of cooperation. The things he had to do to appease such a primitive species, honestly.

Besides that, his speech was strange. He understood English well enough, but something was off with the way Ben spoke. It didn't take him long to figure it out, though.]

Then we have a common goal. [He dropped his arms, looking slightly less defensive than before.] I do not find the natives trustworthy. That is why I asked you.
rube: (thirteen)

[personal profile] rube 2014-03-26 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
[that...is a little surprising. compared to the others, ben is dressed way, way down. his hair is mussed and his skin and clothes are covered in dirt and dust. if anything, he thinks he'd be the last person someone comes up to for answers.]

Don't know anything. If you wanna come along with me, I don't care, but I wanna get out of here and I can't waste any time standing around.
notavirtue: (do not let them wield it)

[personal profile] notavirtue 2014-03-26 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
[Ben's actions meant more than his appearance - most of the humans were still in the hall, eating and drinking and probably getting poisoned. He'd seen a few others ducking out, but this one was just lucky enough to be in his path when he'd finally gotten curious.

As much as it chafed him to follow a human, it was probably for the best. This architecture was alien to him, and he'd probably wind up in the dungeons before finding the front doors.]

I will not slow you down. [He inclined his head in what might considered a polite nod.] You may call me Javik.
rube: (five)

[personal profile] rube 2014-03-26 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Nice to meet you.

[ben gives javik a once-over, as if deciding whether or not taking him along is a good idea, before he lets out a gruff mumble of fine and turns on his heel to make his way down the hallways. the rooms near the party were bound to have nothing important, even if he may check on them on his way back (if he doesn't get lost in the place first, anyway).

the sounds from the party carry through the halls and he decides the less that he can hear them, the more likely he is to find a clue, or anything, besides the map and locket that he's put delicately into his pockets.

the walk is quiet for the most part; ben doesn't see much of a point of mindless conversation and he's much more focused on checking out the rooms, and he's more than a little in awe of the architecture. if he weren't in such a rush, he'd probably stick around to get a good look of things.]
notavirtue: (profile)

[personal profile] notavirtue 2014-03-27 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
[Javik was of like mind when it came to conversation, and small talk was considered a pointless waste of time. He didn't follow too closely, lingering over tapestries and the various odds and ends that decorated (or littered) the hallways. While Ben certainly seemed to be in a hurry, Javik's exploration was more measured. A lifetime of nasty surprises around every corner had tempered any impulsiveness he might have had a long time ago.

After sweeping through several hallways, Javik began to wonder if this place ever opened up into anything else. Wasn't there at least a window? He thought that was normal for surface dwellings. What little he'd seen of Earth had been blasted by war, so he didn't have much of a baseline comparison. This was assuming they were on a planet in the first place, of course.]

Was there anything like this place on Earth? Or its colonies?
rube: (nine)

sorry about the delay! ;u; im super enjoying this, jsyk

[personal profile] rube 2014-03-28 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
[ben stops in front of a door as javik questions him, and at first, all he does is give a small shake of his head (which is hardly noticeable) before opening the door to an office. it's empty besides the array of books and a few places to sit. the desk is unlikely to hold anything of importance, but ben decides to go in and check anyway.]

No. Only castles I've ever seen were in books. Where I came from, people didn't have money for this.

[he waves a hand lazily to motion to the room and, generally, the castle, before rifling through a few books left on the desk. they aren't important and he knows it.]
notavirtue: (hm?)

no worries! and so am i! (now to finish this app...)

[personal profile] notavirtue 2014-03-29 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
[Not for the first time, Javik found himself annoyed by a human. Normally they were full of unwanted ideas or advice, but this one wasn't even trying to be helpful. The fact that he didn't match up to his previous experience with humans was what was more annoying than his actual behavior, though. So much for making heads or tails from this mess.

He hesitated before following Ben inside, finally running his hand along the threshold to get a feel of the place. It was old, certainly, but the people that had been through here were utterly foreign to him.]

Your people have built greater things than castles of brick and stone.

[A bit gingerly, Javik picked up a book, frowning as its pages spilled open. It was pretty obvious he'd never held a book in his life.]
rube: (eight)

good luck! c:

[personal profile] rube 2014-03-31 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Don't know what you're talkin' about.

[when he turns around, he stares as javik struggles to hold a book. he watches for a moment, deciding on whether or not he should help him.

with some hesitation, he takes a few steps forward, reaching with one hand to adjust the book that javik is holding.]

Here.

[and then, as if he hadn't done a thing, he maneuvers himself around javik to pick at a few other books before deciding the room is worthless and walking back out into the hall.]
notavirtue: (Grumpy bug)

you too!

[personal profile] notavirtue 2014-03-31 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
[Javik tensed when Ben approached, but didn't resist as the book was righted in his hands. It was hardly an improvement, though, given the fact that the script between the pages was alien to him. Still, it was clear it was meant to convey information in an entirely useless manner. It was so old he couldn't pick up on who had written it, just echoes of who had used it.

He lingered a few moments with the old tome until Ben walked out, setting the book back down where he had found it.]

What do you mean, you do not know what I'm talking about? This place must seem archaic even to you.

[He was still operating on the assumption that this human shared origins with him, where space travel was the norm.]
rube: (three)

[personal profile] rube 2014-04-01 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
[his lips press into a thin line; he's not entirely sure how to answer javik, if at all. sure, he's read of majestic places from the bible, but the only other fantasy he'd read wasn't even fantasy -- he had mostly read mystery books.

glancing over his shoulder, he shakes his head.]

I'm not from a place that has fancy castles like this. None of this seems real.
notavirtue: (we thought YOU would)

[personal profile] notavirtue 2014-04-02 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
[Real? He expected someone to find it ancient and backwards, not unreal. A bit absentmindedly, he wiped his hands across his thighs, as if ridding himself of dirt from the book.]

Then what sort of place are you from? [He considered a moment, judging the way Ben was dressed again. He hadn't spend much time among civilians on the Citadel, and he certainly hadn't been paying attention to their clothing. Now that he thought about it, though, there was definitely a difference. Maybe he was asking the wrong questions.] What was the date? The year?
rube: (twelve)

[personal profile] rube 2014-04-02 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
[ben only went to school until the 6th grad, he hasn't had any schooling on medieval history, let alone look it up himself.]

Originally, Milfay, Oklahoma.

[he gives javik an odd look at the next question.]

1935.
notavirtue: (now where did i park the car...)

[personal profile] notavirtue 2014-04-02 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
[He was going to assume that Oklahoma was on Earth, and while his grasp of its history was shaky, he knew humanity had only joined the galactic community in the past 30 years. A young species, certainly, but this was somehow even worse. 2186 was a long way from 1935. Javik looked stricken for a moment.]

19 - then you have not even achieved space flight in your time? You are still confined to one planet!

[Unbelievable. What was next, Ben wasn't even a soldier?]
rube: (eleven)

[personal profile] rube 2014-04-02 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
What.

[it doesn't even come out as a question. ben slows his pace to a stop and turns to face javik completely. he isn't sure what to think, what to say, or what the guy was even going on about. he had lived on a small farm with his mother and grandfather for most of his life before things started going downhill and he was picked up by the carnival. whatever javik is talking about, ben has no idea how to respond.

instead, he stares at him expectantly, waiting for a long explanation or at least something to go off of.]
notavirtue: (dat sneer)

[personal profile] notavirtue 2014-04-02 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
[Javik stared back for several long moments, before blinking all four eyes at once and tipping his chin up. What was the point of this kidnapping and the war if their technology was completely nonexistent? What sort of edge were they hopping to gain by taking people that were probably clueless to mass effect and modern warfare? His tone was angry, even if it wasn't directed at Ben.]

This place is madness! Are you even familiar with guns?

[He unholstered the weapon at his hip, which was... pistol-like, at least. A few hundred years had had an impact on human weapons. Javik held it flat, careful not to aim it directly at Ben's face. He had enough manners to be that courteous.]
rube: (six)

[personal profile] rube 2014-04-02 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
[ben misinterprets the anger and takes it a little too personally, lips curling back as he speaks, tone sharp and bitter and his voice is much louder than it needs to be.]

The hell you gettin' mad at me for? I'm not from the goddamn stone age!

[he does take a step back once the weapon is drawn. he's all bark and no bite now, voice low and nervous,]

What is that?
notavirtue: (Enkindler senses tingling)

i'm sorry the rude-o-meter just went into the red

[personal profile] notavirtue 2014-04-02 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
[Ben's reaction was momentarily ignored in favor of the pistol, which should have reacted to being drawn. Snarling, Javik smacked it with his free hand, but it failed to expand so he could even pull the trigger. Primitive, useless contraption - ]

It is a pistol, gifted to me by one of your own people. Clearly an inferior design if it will not work when needed -

[He gave it one last smack before giving up. There was still the rifle slung over his shoulder, made by his own, but he'd inspect that later. When he finally turned his attention back to Ben, he took note of his posture.]

I suppose it is not your fault you were brought here from so long ago, though I cannot fathom why they would think you could be of any aid.
rube: (fourteen)

no i love it!!

[personal profile] rube 2014-04-02 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
[ben shakes his head slowly, frowning at the pistol. sure, he recognized ... some of it, the shape and trigger were partially recognizable, but where are the bullets held? how do you cock the gun?

he kind of wants to touch it, to figure it out, but he doesn't dare.

to be honest, ben has an idea why the imps brought him here, why he's even wanted here in the first place, but it's not like he's going to be sharing that fact any time soon, if ever.]

Don't know, don't care. I just wanna get out of this place before it's too late.
notavirtue: (Fuck off ape)

they're best friends already :')

[personal profile] notavirtue 2014-04-02 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
[Javik returned the pistol to its place at his hip, crossing his arms over his chest again. The frown that had settled on his face was apparently there to stay, accompanied by an irritated huff.]

Too late for what? Do you believe them when you say your home will be destroyed if we do not win?

[Because he didn't. He wasn't buying the whole 'green shard in your chest' thing, either. That was definitely something he would have noticed, no matter what they said or tried to explain to him. He'd spent his life fighting an enemy that could twist your thoughts to its will, and he wasn't about to fall for this one.]
