[he winces just slightly as she takes his hand, but he's thankful for her forgiveness, offering a short nod in return as he hoists her back up onto her feet. the girl is so light that the motion is almost graceful, even if he withdrawals his hands so quickly it's as if she's burned him.]

Fine. Just fine.

[he shifts his weight from one foot to the other, watching the girl warily. he's not entirely sure if he should just leave her, but he may as well ask a few questions while he can, despite his discomfort.]

You ain't from the places these people are from, are you?

[ben only asks because she's dressed differently. most of the people around them were dressed ... well, he isn't too sure how they were dressed. some were in clothes he's never seen before in his life. compared to him, they were wealthy and "futuristic".

now it's not only his eyes that show suspicion, but his entire face. he narrows his eyes at her before he concludes that she must be important somewhere, so he decides to go along with it.]

Ben Hawkins. [a beat,] Born of nowhere special.

[he's a little surprised that she's dipping her head to him, too. he's never been treated with much respect, and for it to be coming from a girl leaves him not knowing how to react. it must be normal for her.]

[there's an awkward silence that settles between them when alayne insists on his home being something to be noted. sure, he was gonna take it over, but the workers came in and tore it all up. it's not special- it doesn't even exist anymore.

he stares at her, lips pressing together as he shakes his head in such tiny motions it's barely noticeable.]

Ain't there no more. Nothin' special about it.

[he gives her a quick once-over, but it's innocent- he means her no harm, he just wants to be sure she is, as she said, alright from the fall. it's a little delayed, but he's more than distracted with what's going on to be completely on-point.]

You got someone here with you?

[to make himself even more clear, he takes a small step back to create distance between them, hands being held up in a mean-no-harm way for a brief moment. the last thing he wants is to create a scene.

as he drops his hands back down to his sides, he shakes his head once more. ben hasn't been paying attention to people he didn't know. he's been too focused on finding a way out, or catching a glimpse of someone who looks similar but is not someone from the carnival. that's really the last thing he needs, though. he'd prefer to be here alone than have carnies trudging through this mess alongside him.]

No, sorry.

[he means it, though his voice is somewhat strained. there's another funky silence between them after that; ben doesn't have anything else to offer alayne concerning her question, and he doesn't have anything else he really wants to ask her. she's just about as clueless as he is.]

[there's a small hint of sympathy in ben's eyes as he moves to leave, albeit a bit hesitantly. he gives her one last look-]

Be careful, Alayne. Find your pa.

[and he's off, slipping through the crowds to find solace by the wall and, hopefully, light a cigarette to keep him calm. alayne is free to find him again if she wishes.]
