After you have been briefed on your purpose here, you will find an endless feast and a night filled with entertainment to placate your concerns. Can I ask you to refrain from that sort of talk, or would that just be pointless?

[Probably pointless. Definitely pointless.]

As it happens, it has nothing to do with either of them. Do you see what I did there, John? I was honest. Sometimes honesty is important in situations like this.

[Definitely pointless, which is probably apparent from the sneer curling John's lip again. There's the strong urge to get up and walk away, not stay in Gabriel's presence - it used to be some kind of balm, a hope at assurance or comfort, but now it felt like something cloying or greasy over his skin.

He wonders if this place has showers.]

Spare me the lecture. You lost any right to talk about honesty four innocent lives ago.

[There is importance, Gabriel thinks, in pretending things have not changed. Or so the internal conversation has gone over and over again since this whole affair ended so poorly. (Which was a pleasant way to put it, to say in the least.) But John doesn't believe in that, John believes in poking and prodding and for once he actually has the higher moral position.

Which makes things difficult. Gabriel frowns.]

Mistakes were made. But they are in the past, and now we need each others help.
