[ there's a long blank stare from korra. it's the kind of long, blank confused stare that gives the audience heart palpitations and a rush of adrenaline as they wait for the horrible news to come crashing down on their shoulders. ]

You know ... Chief Beifong's sister's house?

[ choking on air in relation to information from season three? isn't that a bit cruel? jeez. ]

[ oh. oh dear. she's. OH... UM. shit shit shit, think fast mako? ]

... I think you're from after us, Asami. We were at the South Pole, Bo, Korra and me, just after the Harmonic Convergence. The time... inconsistency thing? Uh, Tarrlok's here too. From before Amon took him, we think. And so's Fire Lord Zuko, and the Toph, but... from like seventy years ago.

[ that's sufficient evidence for his next claim, right? he thinks he's learning. ]

We've... [ now it's mako's chance to look at korra as if asking for confirmation, since she's kind of the one who made the decision, interacting with tarrlok and aang and now zuko and toph... ]

[ she looks up at mako too, shaking her head in disbelief. ]

We've been trying to keep some information on a need-to-know basis. When Avatar Aang was here, he didn't... really take too well to finding out that I was next in line. [ she bites her lip slightly. ] So, I guess you could say we're trying not to give everyone bad news they're not ready to ... hear? Yet?

[ SHRUGS? ]

[sangilak]

[ aaaand here's where it all falls apart: ]

But... to Spirit World with that, I wanna know! [ her face breaks out in a grin and she shoves mako back a pace or two just in case he doesn't wanna hear, stepping closer to asami and holding her hands excitedly up at chest-level. ] I could use some good news!

[ the sound of mako smacking himself in the face is audible. ]

[ WELL THAT SURE IS A LOT TO TAKE IN WOW UH. Especially the whole ... Zuko and Toph thing. What even. But with Korra in her face, looking for good news ... She'll ask about who needs to know what, later. ]

Uh ... well, the good news is, when you left the portals open ... a bunch of new airbenders started appearing everywhere! So we started traveling around to find them, to send them back to the Air Temple, and help them learn how to control their powers.

[ oh spirits.

oh my goodness just look at the way korra's face lights up at that. her jaw drops, her lips pull away from her teeth and displays them in a wide grin and she looks like she's about to start celebrating, pumping her arms in excitement — and then remembering she's in the middle of a big crowd and mako's looking Hella Frazzled by all this. ]

Really?! Yes! I was hoping I did something good with that!

Yeah, I think Tenzin was pretty happy about it too.

[ kind of an understatement there, Asami. kiiiind of an understatement. but she continues: ]

We'd heard about someone who'd just recently gotten airbending powers in Zaofu, this city in the Earth Kingdom. So we went to go check it out, and ... it turned out that the woman who runs the place is apparently Chief Beifong's half-sister, and the whole city is made out of metal. Her daughter was the one who suddenly became an airbender.

[ korra catches her breath and rounds on asami again, dragging the other woman into an excited hug after she finishes filling in the information. ]

This is incredible! Was she an earthbender before, or could she not bend? [ oh no look what you started, asami. ] What about you? Do we know any other airbenders? How many were there?

[futurehbic]

[ She has to laugh a little at Korra's excitement, patting her on the back as she's hugged ]

I don't think she could bend before she got her airbending powers. But it sounds like she's already pretty good at it, from what you were saying.

... Nothing happened to me, but Tenzin's brother Bumi became an airbender. There were a lot of people in Republic City alone who started being able to bend ... but I have no idea how many there are in all. There were so many reports coming in from all over the world.

[sangilak]

[ aw, that's fine, asami doesn't need bending to kick ass; korra just thought it would be kinda awesome though. one more person they know and adore to join the air nomads. ]

Geeze, I wish Tenzin was here right now. [ ... wait, your logic is faulty, korra. ] Or, at least Avatar Aang. He would've loved to hear about this.

[futurehbic]

I can't believe he was ever here. I mean, I know you've probably met him, but ...

[ it's a little weird to think of two (not evil) Avatars existing at the same time ]

I only met him a couple times, and that when he was older. [ there's a helpless shrug. ] The Aang I met here was about Jinora's age. He left not too long after we all got here, but I'm glad I got to meet him at least.

[ and a grin pulls at her lips as doll jumps from her shoulder to mako... and then down to the floor because ohmyspirits she smells a food and she's going to hunt it down, leaving mako the harried daddy and running after her so she doesn't get lost in the crowd.

korra seems really not at all bothered by this turn of events, like it happens all the time. ]

I'm glad you're here, too. It's been really weird without you around.

[futurehbic]

[ Her eyes follow the dragon for a moment, and the corner of her lips quirk up as she sees Mako run off after the little thing. Well, at least something around here would be keeping him busy ...

Anyways, she looks back to Korra with a soft smile ]

It was pretty weird thinking I was the only one here, too. [ Not that she couldn't handle herself. She probably could. But ... they're a team! And any crappy situation is usually better when she has the people she knows and trusts around to work together with. ]

So ... be honest. How crazy is it around here? I mean, given this is supposed to be a war and all ...

[ "how crazy is it around here". what an interesting and seemingly innocent question to ask, asami...

they're all just lucky they come from a place where making enemies with the avatar is pretty standard, otherwise korra would be extremely hesitant about being "honest". ]

A few months ago, some of the Unseelie army marched on our territory so me and a bunch of others had to fight them back to keep people in the castle safe. We won, and the Unseelie Queen placed a bounty on our shards.

[ she's taking this very seriously. she wants asami to be prepared for all the craziness. again, not that asami can't handle herself — even though she's a non-bender, she's been taking defense classes since she was a little girl and even korra can admit that even though asami's not trained on the same level as her or even the fabulous bending bros, the girl has some moves and she's been extremely helpful in korra's quest back home. ]

I was sent on a diplomatic mission... [ her lips press together and she tugs at one of her wolftails ] I failed. A month ago, a few assassins broke into my room and tried to kill me.

[ beat ]

They failed.

[futurehbic]

[ Well, shit, that's pretty serious ]

... It really is an all-out war, then.

[ But more importantly, her friend was almost killed -- so she places a reassuring hand on Korra's shoulder ] Hey, don't worry. If they ever try anything like that again, you can bet they're going to regret it.

[ Because Asami has no intention of letting her friends get assassinated ]

[sangilak]

[ the weight of asami's hand on her shoulder brings a grin to korra's features. it's by no means bright or excited, but it looks like she's at least a bit more comfortable with the way things are now that miss sato's around. ]

Is that a promise? I'll hold, you punch?

[ and then they can switch, of course. ]

[futurehbic]

[ Asami gives her a confident smirk right back ]

They'll never know what hit them.

[sangilak]

[ a few seconds tick by before finally korra lets her expression mirror asami's, that confidence seeping into her smirk as she lifts her hands and rubs her knuckles. ]

Dealing with all of us as a team, they'll need to step up their game. [ or even dealing with them two by two, tbh. ] I'll have to contact the demigods later, see if we can set up another game of capture the flag.
