[Raising an eyebrow, Grainne looks him over up and down in a calculating way. There is something a bit wrong here, and she isn't above calling him out on it. She doesn't quite understand the past and future reference simply because this is completely out of her depth.]
I beg your pardon, but I find that hard to believe. You hardly look anything like a tribesman... even of the Brigantes. And I dare say you are not of our cousins in the north or south. Where's your torque? And your hair is not that color because of lime. That manner of dress doesn't even bear resemblance to a Roman. Is your dress because you a sort of cultist? A Greek, perhaps? Though, I would say you put me far more in mind of a Norseman if I were to base just on your appearance.
[Sorry, Kayneth. She just called you her equivalent of a barbarian.]

[...he does not miss that implication given that he's studied enough history to know what she's talking about, but... di...plomacy...]
Well, my ancestors were Norman, but what I was really intending to say was that I'm from a time long after yours, which is why I don't display the characteristics or the fashion of any group you'd be familiar with.
[...to be fair, he's foppish enough for a viking, though...]

[Grainne considers this, very carefully, and still giving him a scrutinizing gaze. There had been another case where time factored into this she learned of quite recently... Did the fae really have that much power, though?]
I am not experienced in such matters... but I will take your word for it, as I do not see what a stranger would have anything to gain with a falsehood. The powers of the fae are strange even to those who know them best.
[She's still betting on viking, don't doubt it!]
Speaking of strangers, that was rude of me. My name is Grainne.
no subject
[The fact that she's from the distant past and named Grainne... well, he smiles a bit, but he doesn't automatically assume she's the Grainne. Who knows how many girls had that name, anyway?]
Ah, no, I should apologize for myself. I was the one to speak to you, after all. I am Lord Kayneth El-Melloi, Ninth Head of House Archibald.
[He doesn't expect her to recognize it, but it's going to take a while for him to stop introducing himself like that...]
no subject
[Well... that explains the fine manners. Not quite so much the odd name. Something in her expression relaxes slightly and her guard drops a little. Grainne even smiles slightly in return.]
I would say it is nothing a little learning will not fix. There are so many people here there must be interesting stories to be heard. Is time magic very common in the future? I'm afraid the only way I know of doing such a thing in my home is visiting the Land of the Young, and that is a one way trip.
[At least she doesn't look like a pirate queen.]
no subject
[the name is strange even for 1000 years in the future, at least...]
And ah, yes, I'm very intrigued about that end of things, myself. It's a rare opportunity indeed, and I don't intend to waste it.
[...he does smile a bit at that last comment, though.]
Well, it's a one way trip only if you get off the horse, isn't it? But no, time magic is still something of a miracle, where I'm from. My encounters with those from the past is less like time magic and more like necromancy
no subject
[She's not unfamiliar with such things, though sometimes the idea makes her a bit nervous.]
Have you met many interesting people?
no subject
[It's said with a bit of a joking smirk, though for all he knows, that could be the case.]
And yes, I have --- though, most of them have had more of a military background. Soldiers, tacticians... those sorts of things. I'm generally more of a scholar, but I wouldn't call myself inexperienced in the ways of battle.
i laughed so hard because in my au waver stole kayneth's artifact and summoned her
[Mostly thinking of a certain someone.]
I do not think I would want to become one. Stories depend as much on the teller as the material. Imagine what people may make me out to be, running off with someone else on the eve of my wedding.
[What was that about wondering how many Grainnes there are?]
It would make sense so many are from a warrior's mettle; few are the ones that change the world in less bloody ways and have their stories retold. What sort of scholar are you?
I... MAY HAVE ROOTED THROUGH YOUR JOURNAL AND DONE THAT ON PURPOSE...
Oh... oh.....................]
Well, those in connection with legendary heroes often enter the legends themselves... depending on the legends, of course. I daresay that sort of thing would factor into things...
[oh wow, this is awkward.]
And true enough --- there are more and more of those as history goes on, but it's rare to find someone who doesn't have a bit of blood in their footprints. Anyway, my areas of study are almost entirely magical in nature, though that generally tends to require an extensive knowledge of history and other arts.
you read through it all and came out alive?
[Grainne laughs softly, nodding once in acknowledgement.]
It sounds very much like the ordeals druids went through during their training, especially with our history being passed on through memory. Sometimes I envied the Romans that they could store history much like a treasure.
[Don't think she hasn't noticed the sudden awkward, though. Her gaze sharpens on him, as if trying to determine what exactly it is...]
no subject
[...HE'LL JUST CONTINUE TO TALK ABOUT THIS INSTEAD OF THAT AWKWARD THING]
Actually, we're a bit more secretive than Magi of old were, but it's actually a bit of a relief to be in a situation where that isn't actually necessary. It can be limiting at times, even if it's a bit of a necessity.
no subject
[She tilts her head and looks up at him with a faint smile.]
A little bit ago you were talking about people becoming connected with legends... you wouldn't happen to have meant something by it, would you? It seemed to make you a little uncomfortable.
[Sorry, Kayneth. Did the legends forget to mention how stubborn she is?]
no subject
There are always accidents, but you could consider those natural selection of a sort.
[...ah. How to present this, exactly...]
Well, on the topic of legendary heroes, I have happened to encounter a certain Diarmuid Ua Duibhne in my time...
no subject
W-well, we all must die some day... I take it to mean that you know of my story then, since you specifically mention my husband.
[She is not certain how she should feel knowing people are practicing necromancy on him. With Aengus it is one thing, but... complete strangers?
Grainne sets a careful gaze on Kayneth. If he has the sense he's being tested, that most certainly what it is.]
You are very lucky, Lord El-melloi. He is the very best of knights, and there is no one more true or honorable than he.
no subject
By which I mean they get themselves killed and don't pass their incompetence on to any children, of course.
...and yes, I'm well aware of both your stories. Though, I really wouldn't be surprised if something was lost in the retelling. Things often are.
[...he's... definitely not missing that. Not at all....]
And I've... gotten that impression, yes.
no subject
Good. I'm glad to know he is appreciated even in the future. I think if stories did not change, we likely would not have so many. There is naught anyone can do about it; that is the way of things and of human minds. Is there something troubling you particularly?
no subject
[...HOW DOES HE FISH FOR INFORMATION IN A WAY THAT'S UNLIKELY TO GET ON THIS GIRL'S BAD SIDE...]
Truth be told, I haven't known him all that long, though he's certainly seeming invested in this... lord thing, I suppose. I'll ask you if anything seems particularly strange.
