[ Harry isn't much of a royalist, so he can deal with that. His smile is bright, easy, and genuine. Although, since his typist is a twit, it's probably worth mentioning that for in-game reasons, Harry has recently lost an eye and is currently sporting a rather dashing red amber replacement. How chic! ]

It's a real pleasure to meet you.

[ ...wait for it. Wait for it. He's starting to put things together. The name, a vague mention of Macedonia (which could be Macedon?), being a king of conquerors. There's a vague recollection of Hagrid talking about gold-digging ants found in India by Alexander the Great and how the muggles thought it was all bunk now.]

This might sound a bit odd, but have you ever seen a giant gold-digging ant?

[How interesting! Perhaps it is a replacement - or maybe it's some sort of fashion. Rider will have to ask about it if he gets the chance]

An ant? No, although I did find little dog-like creatures that did much the same thing as they dug.

[ Harry shrugs and feels a bit sheepish for having asked such an odd question, but so long as Iskander doesn't seem put out, he won't be bothered. ]

When I was in school, we learned about how Alexander the Great went east, on beyond India, to conquer the world and he found these giant ants, the size of a mule, that gathered gold. There was also something about camels, but I don't really recall that bit.

So you have heard of me, then! But as I have found before, you shouldn't trust accounts from people you don't already know.

They weren't quite that large. I believe they call them "gophers" nowadays. They dug tunnels under the desert, just as ants, and the dirt they threw out was mixed with gold. The Indian men took their camels out to where they dug and loaded them down with the gold to carry away.

[Hermione is going to be so envious. (And likely have so many questions she'll want to ask.)]

Oh, I know those, but in my world, the ants really were and are real. They're a bit like nifflers, but not as friendly.

[Given that they have a tendency to eat people.]

[Everyone who doesn't know Rider is envious. Even people who don't know about him]

You don't say! Are they really that large?

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a niffler?

If you could tame one, you could ride it like a horse.

[ That's a very big "if", Harry. ]

They're sort of small, squashy, round things with a long nose that love anything metal. If it shines, they'll try to eat it.

[personal profile] getinthechariot 2014-09-16 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't have to tame it, but I take your point!

[His Riding stat ensures that - he can ride anything that's not a god or a dragon, pretty much]

Those would be entirely too useful to have when raiding!
