[It does seem rather . . . historic, which at least is something Dorian can appreciate. No one from the Napoleonic era would be any better at this than he is.

(Even if they get dragons.)

So Dorian smiles a little, delicate expression as it is, and exhales a flickering laugh of agreement.]
Certainly, I have more than done without for my whole life. I wouldn't mind so much if it hadn't been loaned to me, but now it is broken, and I without even a sense of how it is meant to be used.

Well, it seems we've both managed to muddle through our lives well enough without whatever it may be before now.

[He pokes unhelpfully at the device. Of course his gesture accomplishes nothing when it comes to fixing the thing, but Granby does like to think it proves a point. One flat piece of glass and metal can hardly be of much importance overall.]

Perhaps the thing hasn't broken entirely and the friend that loaned it to you can repair it?

Do you think so, truly? [Dorian looks up at Granby with a fragile hopefulness, keen to grasp on to an idea that will help him slip out of trouble.] Perhaps, if the flaw is only in the casing, and not in the working of the device itself, it would be only a little trouble to have the case replaced . . .

That's it. In any case, the whole thing hardly seems worth working yourself into a state over it.

[Granby might be dressed (sloppily) like a soldier, but act or speak like one and he certainly isn't heartless. Every bit of his good nature is out in full force. This young man has a look to him that tells Granby he'd have to be a complete scrub to be anything other than friendly.]

I'm John Granby, by the way. [He offers his hand with a smile.] Captain on Iskierka before arriving here.

[It does much to assuage Dorian's concern, his shame and his anxiety both, particularly with such a smile before him. He accepts the hand with a particular mix of the grace of much theoretical social training and the uncertainty of little social experience. He knows how firm a handshake should be but doesn't know what that actually is supposed to be like.] I'm Dorian Gray. It's a pleasure to meet you, Captain Granby. I appreciate your kindness very much.

[In that way he is the exact opposite of Granby, who is all experience and very little social training at all. Aviators aren't exactly expected to spend much time in situations that would call for those kinds of skills. But he's more than comfortable with everyday interactions.]

Just Granby, if you please. I've nothing to be captain of here. [It's only through some minor miracle that he can say that without letting the regret he feels reflect in his face.] And besides, there is no Aerial Corps here to recognize it if I did.

[The lack of formality is something he is a little more capable of handling after his interaction with Lord Henry; the comment about the Ariel Corps is disorientating.] Excuse me, but—the Aerial Corps? I don't believe I'm familiar.

[Wait is that rude? Oh no, oh no—] Not, I mean, that they aren't familiar to others—no doubt they're very familiar, I'm simply not a military man, you see, not in the least bit—familiar—with it, so I wouldn't know anything at all about it.
