[His expression falls, and he draws back into himself.] It doesn't matter. I have attempted manual work. I did not enjoy it.

[Dorian doesn't quite get that, although he does appreciate the flattery.] I . . . that isn't really a problem. I can take care of myself.

This place really is quite remarkable. I have never seen anything like it. Have you?

[He follows along to the second line of thought and shakes his head.] It is entirely new to me as well, only visible to me through paintings and poetry. It is enchanting.

I can't quite say I've even seen this sort of thing in paintings. [as they pass one of the cafes, there is a television. She braces Dorian's arm a bit tighter and pulls him over towards the cafe and the television] Do you see that? Is it some sort of miniature theater? [she's not getting too close, but she does squint at it] How on earth would they shrink all of those people down?

[Oh my god that seems horrifying.] Do you think they would do that? [OH MY GODDDD]

I - I don't know. There are faeries here...

[there's only a couple people in the cafe, and they are used to tourists by now, so they don't really pay much attention to the newcomers or their reactions. Mary lets go of Dorian's arm to step inside and stand right in front of the television.]

Hello? [a hand cautiously goes up to try to reach through, and she's startled as her fingers connect with glass] ...ooh!

[Woah. That sure is something.] What if it is a matter of the development of the photograph?

I don't know what that means.

Oh, a photograph is—it is as if a painting were taking all at once, by a mechanical hand. They catch the light and it . . . imprints.

[...He thinks?]

Is it dangerous?

Not at all, at least not in anything I have ever heard of. They take a painful amount of time to happen, but only that.

[prioritise]

Then they are not really there? It's just a moment captured in time... [she cautiously raises her hand again, tapping her fingers against the glass]

Or—or several moments, I suppose.

Yes, I suppose it would be several. Have you ever been the subject of one of these 'photographs'?

[depicted]

Oh, no, my uncle never seemed to care for them—although Lord Henry said he might like one of me, as Basil will be giving me the picture. [Dorian realizes he has to explain.] Basil is a friend of mine, a painter, and he did a portrait of me that he said is mine to keep. But Lord Henry asked for a photograph and I think I could sit for any amount of time as the photographer does his work, so long as I could listen to Lord Henry speaking, so I don't mind.

I've always had terrible luck with portraits. They never look a thing like me. But this one must be quite good if you are so eager to keep it and so many are eager to have it as well.

You and this Lord Henry, you are very close then?

[depicted]

It is a terrible thing that any portraitist would mistreat a face such as yours. Lord Henry says that my picture is the best work Basil has ever done. [He does smile about Lord Henry, but it is with such a weight of admiration. Lord Henry is the most mesmerizing man he has ever met.] I believe that Lord Henry and I are very much to be fast friends, yes.

Well with your charms, I can't imagine you setting your sights on anyone and not making them your friend.

[depicted]

[He smiles and ducks his head.] That is very kind of you. I should say as much for you; you are most compelling.

[prioritise]

[laughs] That is very kind of you, but I'm sure there are quite a few who would gladly wish to argue the point with you.

[staring at that television again] What is most compelling though is where the sound is coming from. It's truly uncanny. [oh look, buttons. she is just going to press some now and whoa, channel changes and suddenly loud volume. she might jump at that sudden change]

[When she jumps, Dorian jumps too, but immediately after moves to step between her and the

loud noise.

SMOOTH AS FUCK.] What—what in name of God just happened?

[prioritise]

[just going to silently cross herself, because God would be helpful here, before putting a hand on Dorian's arm as she steps out from behind Dorian and closer to the television] I do not think God has any part in this sort of devilry. [bracing herself, she steps forward and starts randomly pressing buttons again, until finally the television turns off]
