Certain of what, exactly? I am certain I had no intention of being cruel. If I overstep, you'll reprimand me, won't you? I wish to fully immerse myself in the mindset of this age, but you see, it proves to be incredibly difficult without my mentor. It is a perilous thing. So you must chastise me for any transgressions, Mr. Gray, and do not hold back for politeness.

[Stand up for yourself, poor, shy boy.]

I could not chastise you for anything, Dr Jekyll. [He manages a slightly braver smile.] How could I be so rude to the Royal Society?

[It's okay, they probably think he's a quack by now, so, it would only be agreeing with them!

Jekyll laughs, and feigning importance, raises his chin a little higher.]

Ignoring my request would be to disregard the orders of a Doctor of Laws, and more besides!

[At least Dorian's smile is getting better in response.] What, dare I ask, is that 'more' besides your doctorate?

More doctorates! I am not only a man of science and medicine, but law as well. So you see, you mustn't disregard the law.

[He has like five doctorates don't underestimate him]

Thinking of, do you study?

[WOW THAT IS SO AMAZING OMG!! Dorian is all wide-eyed admiration for Dr Jekyll.] How incredible!

[Wait, this is about him again. He is shy again, except he's a huge nerd so he wants to talk about it. But also, it isn't exactly the most popular topic in social circles and he knows that.] I do, Doctor. At Cambridge. Christ's College.

Ah, how wonderful, I too studied at Cambridge! Theology, then? Such a rare topic, but as good a topic as any. Better, in fact.

[He tries not to allow his smile to waver, as his statement comes with the distinct feeling of dread and pain which he knows to mean Hyde's annoyance.]

[Dorian shakes his head slightly, somehow feeling he is a disappointment to Jekyll by not studying Theology.] No—I am not settled, but—mathematics is what I like best.

Ah, very interesting! Too many ignore mathematics, even in my field, yet they always hold relevance, do they not? You must be wise, Mr. Gray.

[His head turns down a little. He needs to get better at taking compliments. (Harry'll teach him!)] It is only that I enjoy them, sir.

Is that reason for shame? No, a passion is a wonderful thing to have, Mr. Gray. You should never apologise nor feel it is lesser than another man's interest.

[Still not quite meeting Jekyll's eyes, Dorian answers.] No, it isn't shame. Thank you, Dr Jekyll. You're very kind. [Even though Jekyll looks his age, he feels so much older. It leaves an impression on this very impressionable youth.]

Hardly! You flatter me, Mr. Gray. Have you a particular area of interest within the broad subject of mathematics? Or is it simply an appreciation for numbers?

Only an appreciation, Dr Jekyll. I have not yet refined my studies. [There's a flutter of that brashness that bubbles to the surface—] It is all so wonderful, so beautiful, and I would hate anyone who forced me to choose between its aspects.

[Jekyll's smile grows, to see Dorian offer some chance to stand up for himself.] Then I shall pray none should ever be so foolish as to force such a thing from you. Never have I heard anyone describe mathematics as 'beautiful', it's a testament to your true investment, and no doubt talent. I admire that.

Do you not think it is beautiful, Dr Jekyll? There is much of song in numbers and much of numbers in song. As music is the purest of all arts, mathematics is the purest of all philosophies.

I had never considered it that way, in truth. And yet, when you explain it, and with such enthusiasm, I know it to be true.

[Encouraged like this, Dorian cannot help but burst into a sweet, happy smile, an expression to abandon all the stress and fear of life in the purity of its pleasure.] I am glad you are convinced. Many others do not seem to feel the same way.

How could I not, when you describe it so well and beautifully? Have you given others this explanation? Although I admit to predisposition to such topics, in relation to my research.

Most do not care to ask about the subject, Dr Jekyll; it is not a very social subject of conversation.

I suppose it isn't, is it? But then, within my social circle are so many men of academia and research, the topic is always bound to appear. I am not one for gossip, this is rather more civilised.

Gossip is such an unpleasant thing, isn't it? [There is a smile again, but this one is somewhere else.] Yet it seems to be all anyone has anything to say about. Oh, except a few very intelligent people, who talk of this and that and every sort of idea. [Lord Henry.] I enjoy their company. But most others don't talk like that.

Too true. If only it were not too late, I would very much have liked to extend to you a dinner invitation. For that was always precisely the sort of company in attendance. I imagine you would be well suited.

[Wow, really? Dorian pretty much lights up. The prospect of being invited to dinner at Jekyll's just seems really wonderful, to enjoy the society of people like the Doctor but also to have such an offer of friendship from the man. Dorian can't even think to contain his happiness at the social kindness.] You would? That is, I would have very much appreciated that invitation, and gladly accepted it. I can only imagine how much of a pleasure it would be to enjoy such company.

I most certainly would! I'm sure my dinner parties were lacking without you, even without recognising a piece to be missing. Although I might be embarrassed now to display a much older figure to you. [He laughs.]
