[Oh. Oh. If her mother spoke to the Outsider, then he couldn't be that bad, right? Her mother was very smart and very kind, and if she spoke to him there has to be a very good reason.

Gently and politely, she takes her hand back after, looking at it curiously. The kiss makes it feel as if she has stuck it down into the cold sea, letting waves rush up on it and then recede away while tickling her with foam. She makes a fist briefly, then flexes the hand open again, and the sensation disappears. She smiles. It was different, but not scary.

Her attention returns to the Outsider's face.]
The men in Dunwall, too. [Her voice is solemn, maybe a bit disappointed.] The ones we thought were our friends. They were acting strange, but Corvo trusted them, so I thought it was okay.

We should be careful.

[ He had rather liked Jessamine Kaldwin; she was not one of his Marked, but she was interesting, as people in power went. Emily had that potential in her; it was why he had appeared to her before, in her dreams. ]

The Loyalists. [ He practically spits the word, something like harsh waves and battering winds in his words. ] Greedy men that wanted power more than anything. All will be well, Emily; they will not win, back in Dunwall.

[ There is a universe, he knows, where Emily falls off the building and dies as they did -- but the Loyalists still don't win, so it's not a lie. ]

[She doesn't know yet what may become of anything, of her, of Corvo, of Dunwall. She doesn't know if Corvo is still alive even, if her will be venturing to save her a second time, or if she shall be imprisoned for eternity, or released and put on the thrown as a puppet.

But the smile that tips the very edge of her lips is actually not a nice and happy smile at all. It's a pleased smile. A knowing smile. Even if her Corvo didn't spill much blood, he reeked of death. Even if her Corvo was strangely sympathetic under the hunt of revenge, there was still revenge. A hint of chaos lies in the depths of her heart, like the pit in a sweet peach.

So she smiles, barely, when the Outsider tells her that the evil men will not win.]
I know. [No matter what, it's reassuring. No matter if she lives or dies, or if Corvo lives or dies, those who betrayed them will be punished.]

They certainly won't.
