I wouldn't really call the latter a "good gambit". Effective for the amount of time it was conceived in, perhaps, but otherwise a bit heavy-handed for my tastes.

I think I'm closer to your mindset than his, which is why I can be so accepting.

Perhaps. And I did make him fire that arrow, which I suppose he would take issue with.

But necessary. No one else could be trusted to make that shot.

[At least, make it without killing him. And Belias is the one person he truly trusted with his life.]

[ oh. she is a careful creature. sansa swallows every accusation and complaint of cruelty -- though they play there in the corners of her eyes. instead, she murmurs a very quiet: ] Did he always ignore you so?

[You know why he dislikes you? Because you intentionally narrow in on the things he doesn't want pointed out and discuss.]

I suppose he had greater things to deal with than a child.

[ you only have yourself to blame, sarelegui -- especially when you leave such obvious gaps in your armour. ]

How disappointing he must have been. [ but this alone is a brave statement. a contentious one. it's a marvel she thinks she will get away with it. ]

I learned not to care. He matters little, in the grand scheme of things.

[Luckily for her, distancing himself from the stab of ache her comment brings takes precedence over crucifying her for making it.]

[ it isn't quite a question. she doesn't need to ask it -- how he relegates the man into nothingness is proof enough. it's a bizarre thing to think about for someone so tied to her blood. and yet --!

and yet some people are not worth anyone's pride. not hers. not even his. ]

[Coolly, almost stiffly:]

I respect his accomplishments. But they aren't mine, [and it'd been made so very clear that there was no desire for a connection with him] so what should I be proud of?

Do you not reap from his accomplishments? [ after all, a name is only a thing passed down from parent to child. and a kingdom! well. who is she to quibble about inheritance when all she's gotten in the end was what the crown called traitor's blood. ]

[enthraller]

His accomplishments were largely on the battlefield. All I gained from him is a title, and through no actual intent.

[Hard to take pride in the inheritance of a crown no one expected him to ever be in line for. Hard to appreciate it as a gift coming from a father who rarely even looked at him. The most that it could be said his father had given him was a deep sense of being unwanted.]

-- He fought a great deal?

[ she understands it. maybe. not the fighting -- but she's met soldiers who are cold and unfeeling. she would not want them for fathers. nevermind that ned stark had fought in the rebellion, that had all been before she was born. he was only ever father to her. ]

[enthraller]

A war hero, in fact. [Large and scarred and so unlike Saralegui himself that they looked about as related as they acted.] But his wars are outdated, and the people who still pursue them shortsighted bigots. As I said, he matters little in the grand scheme of things.

[steeledskin]

As you say. [ she at long last concedes. ] He matters little.
