Are you afraid of the Void, or relieved by it? What is your life like, or your relation to the courts? 02. BATTLE. Perhaps some court armies are ransacking your home, and all you can do is flee the blades and the fires. Or perhaps you've been conscripted and been given rough armour and arms, and told to charge the strangers on the opposite side. What god to you pray to, hoping for protection against fearsome shardbearer magic and might? Do you survive? 03. THE FEASTS. Perhaps you've been travelling and been offered sanctuary at the castles; or are there on some important business. Whatever the reason, you're at one of the castles for one of the legendary feasts of welcome for far-worlder shardbearers, and get to eat and drink your fill as they take it all in. 03. WILDCARD. Your own scenario!

[the implications aren't lost, and she shuts the book in her hands, gesturing to it and then him. he's the author? he's the one whose books she's been so avidly reading? if it's so, then goodness. how marvelous that they were drawn to the same shop on the same day.]

--It sounds kinda jerkish to say yes, doesn't it? Makes it seem like I lurk in bookshops waiting to strike weird conversations.

[He smiles, a little embarrassed. But it is a confirmation that yes, that's his work.]

[the reaction is immediate, her eyes widening. oh. oh, really. suddenly she doesn't know how to carry this conversation entirely, though the look on her face is less shock and more being stunned, as one would be upon meeting someone quite famous (at least to them).

with her free hand, she can make the familiar gestures that amount to one thing:]

[if not, she could write.]

[For a moment, Waver fumbles. He's learned bits and pieces, he can understand more than he can respond with and so Grell gets--]

A little [Followed by:] The basics.

[erythristic]

[she nods, and puts the book in her bag, taking out a notebook and something to write with instead. enough practice has made her fast with her words this way.]

This should be easier, then. I can hardly believe it is you though. I've read everything you've published, and they've been wonderful pieces of work. Someone less skilled would make it too dry to suffer through, or rely too heavily on personal opinion and humor and impact the quality of the information.

[gordianknots]

[There's no hiding how red Waver's face goes at the compliment. It's genuinely meant, and Waver is more than pleased by that.]

That means the world, I'm glad it's readable without being as dry as a turkey. Er-- would you like to have this conversation in a place with a table?

[erythristic]

[Grell nods, lips twitching up into a smile, and she goes to open the door for them both. he can lead the way, if he knows a place, or else she'll dig through her memory to find something.]

[Waver does know a place, and he's quick to the door. Not as quick as Grell, and he looks a hair red as he lets her hold the door for him.]

Ah, thank you.

[erythristic]

[nothing but a smile as they both go out, then. just a touch too slow this time, Waver. at least the weather's not bad today, to add another good thing onto this list of fortuitous events.]

[Waver's hands go into his pockets, and he's quick to make sure that Grell is with him as he steps onto the high street. There's a quiet tavern a few doors down, and Waver knows it'll be empty when they head in. It's too early for the regular crowd.]

Do you have a usual drink, by the way?

[erythristic]

[tapping her lips thoughtfully, she shakes her head. one took what they could get in her travels, so as long as it wasn't cut with piss and water it was acceptable.]

[gordianknots]

All right then.

[Waver spots the tavern he has in mind, The Centaur's Hoof, and darts so he can hold the door for Grell this time.]

There's a good corner booth in the far right of the room.

[erythristic]

[she takes the hint and goes that direction, settling herself in the booth when she's there and setting her notebook on the table to flip to the page she had been using to speak with him.

truthfully, Grell's definitely not over getting to meet him. his works had been invaluable in her travels - how did you ever thank someone for that?]

[gordianknots]

[Waver's quick to sit across from her once inside. There's no one in there that he recognizes, aside from one of the bar tenders, and truth is that's how he prefers it.

He settles in his seat across from Grell, and he offers his hand over to Grell.]

We should probably say hello properly. It's nice to meet you.

[erythristic]

[with another smile, she takes his hand to shake it, and then adds more to the page.]

Nice to meet you too. What a coincidence that you'd be there when I was picking up your new book. That's almost what you'd call fated.

[gordianknots]

In the book of another author, to be certain. May I ask your name?

[erythristic]

It's Grell, sir. And I know you're Waver Velvet.

[gordianknots]

Waver's fine. And are you all right starting with beer?

[erythristic]

[just a nod, before she adds in something else.]

What did you mean when you spoke of corrections?

[gordianknots]

Cothromach's become a lot more closed off, lately, I'm afraid. That kind of information is stuff I like to try and mention.

[erythristic]

Good thing I'm not travelling that direction soon. I'd hate to show up and get turned away at the gate.

Do you know what happened?

[gordianknots]

A mix of increased court tensions and leadership turmoil, as I understand it.

[Waver pauses, making eye contact with the bar tender and flashing two fingers - a request for two beers.]

[erythristic]

Figures. They can never keep it to their own castles, can they?

[gordianknots]

Never. I swear, I'm about to head to Briste just to avoid all of them.

[erythristic]

You're too young for Briste. Wait another twenty years so they welcome you with open arms.
