REINCARNATED AS A NATIVE

YOU WERE BORN A NATIVE

You were born in the wilds, or the unmapped hamlets; or perhaps one of the grand cities of ALLAIDH DARACH. But you were never the master of your own destiny; and your world has been marred by war almost since its first turns.

OPTIONAL SCENARIOS

01. DAILY LIFE.
Did you pledge yourself to a court? Are you a guard or a soldier? Or perhaps your a simple tradesman hoping the breadth of the war never touches you and yours. You were an adult young, remember, by 13 or 14: do you have a family? Are you afraid of the Void, or relieved by it? What is your life like, or your relation to the courts?

02. BATTLE.
Perhaps some court armies are ransacking your home, and all you can do is flee the blades and the fires. Or perhaps you've been conscripted and been given rough armour and arms, and told to charge the strangers on the opposite side. What god to you pray to, hoping for protection against fearsome shardbearer magic and might? Do you survive?

03. THE FEASTS.
Perhaps you've been travelling and been offered sanctuary at the castles; or are there on some important business. Whatever the reason, you're at one of the castles for one of the legendary feasts of welcome for far-worlder shardbearers, and get to eat and drink your fill as they take it all in.

03. WILDCARD.
Your own scenario!

Grell! I'm so pleased you came.

[She's greeted with a bright smile and a quick hug, but once Áine releases her, her hand lingers around Grell's own, leading her inside the idyllic little cottage she lives in isolated only by the fact it's in the middle of some woods. There'd always been rumors it hadn't been there since before the girl herself showed up, but aside from that there's nothing particularly wrong about it. It's a nice little place.

Once they're in the kitchen, she leaves Grell to get a chair for herself by the table and gets to brewing them up some tea. Over the initial excitement, she starts signing with her hands instead of talking. It was a good way to improve what Grell had taught her.
]

(How have you been? Have you kept well?)

[isolated it might be, but it's at least pretty, and the sweetness surrounded by something slightly ominous fit Áine rather well. it's always been the way ever since they've met that something unnerves her about the girl on a subtle level, but perhaps it is only her intelligence and how stubbornly cheerful she is despite everything. one distrusted optimism after a while.

she lets Áine pull her inside, smiling back and taking a seat when the opportunity arises, waiting for her to come back before anything else. when she signs, it's with care that she doesn't go too fast so that ]

(Just more busy than I expected to be. I hope you've been doing better?)

[She waits for Grell's response before pouring them both some tea, eyes closing briefly. When she's done she places the cup down in front of her and takes the seat closest to Grell, placing her own cup down too.]

(It's been quiet. It's always quiet here, that's why I like it.)

[She claps her hands together once before continuing, beaming just a bit more.]

(But I have a present for you!)
erythristic: (time.)

[her head tilts just so, picking up her cup and blowing on it gently before taking a sip, using one hand to continue.]

(I'm happy it's been good for you. But a present, you are too kind.)

[She gets up and walks around to stand behind Grell.]

Close your eyes! And no peeking until I say so.
erythristic: ((formal: antique.))

[she rolls her eyes exaggeratedly, but she closes her eyes and keeps them shut, even though her curiosity is strong about the whole deal. it wouldn't do to ruin the surprise.]

[personal profile] devilheart 2015-09-08 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
[What she ends up doing is slipping a thin silver chain around Grell's neck, from which a small metal insignia hangs; clearly a rune of some kind.]

Alright! Now I need you to do one last thing for me: try to speak.

[Yep, magical shit is afoot. ill leave whether or not it works up to you]
erythristic: (idea.)

[personal profile] erythristic 2015-09-08 09:50 am (UTC)(link)
[she looks at the necklace first, taking in the rune. it's pretty, but it's just that - something she doesn't quite think will pull out a curse that laid its roots in her long ago.

still, she takes a breath, and almost begins to sign what she wants to say before trying to remember that speech comes out of her mouth.]

...What am I to say?

[it's quiet, weak, it shows that it hasn't been used for over a decade with the curse that choked it from her, and for a moment she almost doesn't believe that she's hearing her own voice again.

she spoke. she could say something again.]

I'm...talking.

[Grell can only look at Áine, eyes wide and shocked.]

[personal profile] devilheart 2015-09-08 12:17 pm (UTC)(link)
[She breathes a sigh of relief once Grell speaks, looking satisfied.]

And how wonderful it is to hear, Grell.

But...I should mention this is by no means a permanent solution. It will only suppress the curse so long as you're wearing it; if it's damaged, taken off...you're right back where you were. I'm afraid what afflicts you is still too powerful for me to dispel.

[And she hates it, really.

But Grell...she was fortunate to meet Grell, the poor soul cursed with such strong magic. Because it makes for such a wonderful grade of magic to study and understand, and one day master. She'll use it as a stepping stone to acquire even greater power still.

Not that she doesn't love Grell sincerely, just as she loves all of her friends, or the nature surrounding them. But who said you couldn't benefit from helping other people, aside some silly notion of altruism? The feeling of having done a good deed was a worthless prize.
]

But one day you'll own your own words again. I promise.
erythristic: (truth.)

[personal profile] erythristic 2015-09-09 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Áine.

[now that words are back, they seem insufficient, and she rises to hug the girl again.]

This is still a miracle, in my view.

[personal motivations or not, she was also benefiting from this, and aside from those silly misgivings she had on occasion, she trusts her friends.

she can talk. she hardly knows what to say first.]
devilheart: (pic#9521872)

[personal profile] devilheart 2015-09-10 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
[At first she hugs back, delighted at the affection; her own is one of greater affection still, head resting upon Grell's shoulder for a moment but buried deeply against it, smiling to herself.

But miracle...no, not yet. One day she'll earn such praise, but for now - when their hug ends, and contact is broken - she tucks her hair behind one ear and shakes her head, voice modest.
]

Ah, well...no. I can't accept such high praise...not for this. But I do appreciate it.

However, once I've truly cured you I'll gladly accept it. Only once I've earned it.
erythristic: (difference between comedy and tragedy)

[personal profile] erythristic 2015-09-10 09:44 am (UTC)(link)
I know you'll be able to do it. If anyone can...

[just loosening its grip on her was something she'd been told was impossible years ago. to have it in front of her as a potential, to feel her own words again, she could dance for joy.

oh, Grell knows that if she ever needs anything, she'll give her what help she can in gratitude.]

Then you really must drop by more often! I'm certain exposure to your affliction will produce something of note onto that charm of yours that I can study.

...although not that I would object to your company for the sake of company, either.

[She moves to sit back down, and taps the table.]

Don't let your tea go cold.
