I am glad to see your dedication to quitting has lasted even into this strange realm we have found ourselves in.

[Sitting down for this meal with John? Check. Gabriel would ask if it's alright but that would indicate that the answer mattered. Clearly, Gabriel is planning on sitting here for at least something of a conversation.]

screams quietly

[There's a pause, the stick of gum halfway to his mouth, tension in the line of his spine and shoulders. But he recovers a second later, continuing with the motion as he narrows his eyes at the angel - ex angel, last he knew - across the table from him.]

Gabriel.

[The name dragged out slow around the sneer John's mouth shapes into. Not a face he's been expecting to see, here or elsewhere. On some low, dark level, he'd been hoping Gabriel would be sucked into the meat grinder of humanity and spat out the other side, and never be a problem he had to deal with again.]

Did you crawl down here to hide?

[Could heaven's gaze pierce through the crust of a fairy mound? Lucifer's? John isn't sure if that's a terrifying or liberating thought.]

i'm so sorry this took so long!! but i was just as excited to see you

[Oh, yes, ex-angel though Gabriel may be, a heavenly degree of patience is still required whenever they have any conversation, and Gabriel employs that now.]

It would not exactly be the best hiding spot.

aaah sorry for lateness too!

You're going to tell me heaven and hell care about fairies?

[Maybe there could be some reassurance taken from the status quo remaining intact, but John wasn't interested in that particular reassurance (how long had he argued the whole war was bullshit, anyway?), and he definitely wasn't interested in taking it from Gabriel.]

It's more likely they threw you out with the trash.

it's worth the wait

Can I ask you to refrain from that sort of talk, or would that just be pointless?

[Probably pointless. Definitely pointless.]

As it happens, it has nothing to do with either of them. Do you see what I did there, John? I was honest. Sometimes honesty is important in situations like this.

[Definitely pointless, which is probably apparent from the sneer curling John's lip again. There's the strong urge to get up and walk away, not stay in Gabriel's presence - it used to be some kind of balm, a hope at assurance or comfort, but now it felt like something cloying or greasy over his skin.

He wonders if this place has showers.]

Spare me the lecture. You lost any right to talk about honesty four innocent lives ago.

[There is importance, Gabriel thinks, in pretending things have not changed. Or so the internal conversation has gone over and over again since this whole affair ended so poorly. (Which was a pleasant way to put it, to say in the least.) But John doesn't believe in that, John believes in poking and prodding and for once he actually has the higher moral position.

Which makes things difficult. Gabriel frowns.]

Mistakes were made. But they are in the past, and now we need each others help.
