cress | the lunar chronicles

ARRIVAL:
[ to say that cress looked and felt a little out of place was a wild understatement. she already looked ridiculous enough — tiny and petite, with wild blonde hair that had been haphazardly cut, in a dirt and sand streaked dress that fits just a little too small.

and barefoot.

standing there, in the middle of a lavish banquet. though "middle" is an exaggeration, as the moment she'd been let in, cress had gravitated towards one of the walls, the ones with the most shadows. she's having a mild freak out, which one might be able to easily deduce if one were close enough to overhear her rambling to herself: ]

I... I am a Duchess. —no, a Princess. A Princess on the night of her debut. I love parties. [ she presses her back against the wall a little harder, harder than necessary, and has to stifle the urge to hyperventilate as she glances around at all the people. ] I love dancing. [ breathe in, breathe out. she willed her imagination to take her away again, someplace safe. someplace comforting. the more she gave into it, the more she began to sound confident in her words. ] Tonight, I am going to have the time of my life.

THE STATION:
[ at the station, one might find cress taking refuge in the web cafe. she'd commandeered the computer at the farthest corner, away from everyone, back and monitor the wall. if she'd intended to look conspicuous, she was succeeding with flying colors, the way she kept glancing over the monitor every now and then, and even over her shoulder, as if she fully expected to be caught and taken away any time soon. ]

Oh come on

[ she lets out a low, half-frustrated, half-desperate whine before hastily clicking away at her mouse. one small hand comes up to smack the side of the monitor a little, though a part of her hates herself for resorting to such base tactics...

it's ridiculous though.

how in the world is she supposed to hack into any servers with technology this old? there's actual monitors and everything...! ]

One can be a Duchess and a Princess all at once, miss.

[Elizabeth both looks and sounds the part, all posh and lacy, yellow curls big and warm in how they frame her young face. She may have been crying recently, though, because the skin around her eyes is a little blotchy. How embarrassing! And her handkerchief is at the ready. But here she is, and this other young lady seems tense, and Lizzie would like to help if she can.]

Or should I say Your Highness?

[ cress' gaze swivels to elizabeth rather suddenly, as if only just realizing the young girl had been so close in the first place. had she really been so caught up that she hadn't even noticed someone approaching her? ]

Oh, I'm — I mean I'm not really—

[ she stops. swallows. then lets out a nervous, sheepish laugh. standing beside someone looking so beautiful and proper only makes cress realize even more out very out of place she is, and she finds herself tugging on the tattered edges of her dress. ]

Just "Cress" is fine. [ she peers at the other girl curiously. ] Are you okay?
smallshoes: (said,be good to yourself.)

[personal profile] smallshoes 2014-03-21 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand, Miss Cress.

[And she does, even if she's bred for balls. Putting yourself out there can be hard sometimes, and Cress seems so uncomfortable. Elizabeth wishes she had her seamstress Nina at the ready - Make her something lovely! she'd say. But she can't help with that part, not right now.]

I'm all right, thank you. [Mostly.] What about yourself? Forgive me, but you don't seem very at ease.

[Well, of course not, Lizzie. No one would be at ease at a time like this. She's good at coming off as oblivious, though, so she can't help but say it.]

[ cress' initial response is a short, breathless laugh, that seems to be lacking all forms of mirth. it's more nervous than anything, a sort of knee-jerk reaction when she's finding words difficult to gather up. ]

I've never really been at a party like this before. [ or ever.

she wants to say more, to say that it's been seven years since she's had any real contact with people, with anybody; that it's been seven years since she's seen a room so big, so bright and full of energy; that she isn't sure how she got here, or why she's here, or where here is in the first place; that she's thankful she's no longer trapped up there in her tiny satellite, but stars did her gratitude not ease her worries about this situation any less.

but instead, all she says is: ]
It's all so... loud.
smallshoes: (my heart is where it's always been.)

[personal profile] smallshoes 2014-03-23 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I like parties, [Elizabeth admits,] but I can't say I care for this one. I think it would be overwhelming to anyone, even a seasoned party-goer. [Such as herself, ahem.]

I'm Elizabeth, by the way. But please, call me Lizzie. I think this has been a big day for everyone involved. Don't chastise yourself for feeling out of place, all right? I feel out of place, too. I feel... I feel... Well, I might as well come out and say it, even if it's poor manners to do so: I'm cross about it! That's how I feel.

anyway here is vincent out of apparently nowhere. ]

im confused am i allowed to reply yet DOES SO ANYWAY

[personal profile] netscreens 2014-03-21 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
[ now vincent, cress had definitely seen approaching. she was staring for the better part of it, but only because she hadn't realized she'd been staring till it was way too late. she couldn't help it though! he looked like one of those people straight out of her net dramas, so posh, and poised, and charming. but despite having seen him, it actually takes her a moment to realize he'd been approaching her. ]

Huh? [ she gapes a little. ] Who — me? [ she hesitates, only then remembering her little mumble to herself. ] Oh! Um — a P-Princess. [ ...

she winces a little. ]
I'm not really one, I was just — [ trying to keep myself from freaking out ] — pretending.

the station.

[ the cafe offers a lot more fun... perhaps to someone more savvy to technology. but the fact that so many crowd themselves here makes an automatic must-visit for pan.

of course, it isn't the actual groups and clutter of people that attracts him. pan seeks for those who appear alone and away from them. call it a force of habit because he isn't exactly seeking for candidates, and much less a girl candidate, but the sight of her (is she in hiding or what?) only makes him want to approach her. she seems like she's doing something bad ]

Now, if I didn't know any better, I'd think you're hiding something behind that screen... [ she's so inconspicuous, you know? ]

[personal profile] netscreens 2014-03-22 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[ if she didn't look conspicuous enough, that startled squeak she gives once caught would probably seal the deal.

cress practically jumps in her little swivel seat when she finds pan hovering behind the monitor. her blue eyes widen, and one hand darts out to touch something along the keyboard. it doesn't sent the monitor away like it would have sent her netscreens, but it definitely clears whatever window she'd been working on.

she stares at him a moment longer before letting out a forced laugh. ]

Wh— Me? What would I have... [ she clears her throat a little, and lifts her chin a little, straightening in her seat. ] I guess you don't know any better, then!

[ oh that sounded kind of rude ]

...I mean, you know. I'm not.
