John is basically Aragorn 2.0 for him, as far as their relationship goes ofc, while John remains his own person. Legolas would go above and beyond for him, offer him all the support and basically march right into the fire and death with him should he actually actively ask for it. The time when John was riding with Thranduil to the Station and they spoke on the lockets, when John said that he will always have a place with him? Those were such an unbelievably important words for him to hear, basically sealed his trust and (platonic!! DON'T CRY JOHN) love for him.
In a way the fact that John can't die is a relief, because well, can't die, but it's also a great pain: because literally living through all that pain and suffering of terrible injuries and everything, but also if John ends up immortal over it? Humans weren't exactly brought up with the idea of living for hundreds or thousands of years, so Legolas knows that would be a great source of pain and suffering for him as well and that's something, at some point, that he'd like to teach John to cope with. Since it's better to start now, because holy fuck it'll take time. Or help him learn cope with what may come, if that makes sense.
Much like Legolas will always find a place with him, John will always find a place with Legolas and he'll help and comfort him always. In a month, in a year, in a hundred of years. They may not always see eye to eye on some matters and there's the whole OLD VS MODERN thing here that may sometimes make it difficult for them to understand each other, but he's willing to make the effort to understand John's world and his views! He respects him and he appreciates the patience John has for him, he appreciates John's subtle humour like whoah too and taking in stride all his teasing.
john!
