Most titles I know of are passed through family ties, but considering how different the modern day is from what I am familiar with, I should not have assumed. Are you an acquaintance of this man? Is that how you know so much about him?

[Time to make something up and make it up convincingly. And to lock the communications feed from here on out.]

The family is old, and discussed within certain circles that are concerned with the private business of families of that particular caliber.

[Diarmuid raises an eyebrow when he notices that the feed has been locked. Interesting...]

And what would be your business within those circles?

Same as any other person in the profession.

[Being on the down low about a mage has been important for survival thus far. Waver hopes that he doesn't have to state it outright.]

[A magus and one who does not seem to want to say it out loud. Diarmuid makes a note of this, and as he does, searches the information he got from his Lord to see if there is anything he can match to this man. However, he finds nothing. Whoever this magus is, he must not have been involved in the war...at least, not the part that Diarmuid has seen so far.]

Does that mean you are familiar with Servants as well?

Only in their connection to the general system of the Grail War. The particulars, however, are unknown to me.

In that case, do you happen to know if there are any other Servants in this place?

[If the man won't tell much about himself, perhaps Diarmuid can get some more information about the kinds of people who are here.]

Not to my knowledge, unfortunately. I had thought that there wasn't anyone familiar with the concept until now.

Considering I arrived just today and have had no one else recognize the title, you were probably correct to assume that. I guess that means the questions I have, I will have to find the answers to myself.

Unless you happen to know how it is I can survive in this place without a Master...

[Perhaps it is a risk to flat out state he is a Servant to this man, but at the same time, it is a risk not knowing what is keeping him manifest in this place as well.]

Honestly, I assume that this place's magic is enough means of sustenance, but I could be terribly and amusingly incorrect and put you in unfair danger.

Your monarchs usually hold court after new arrivals. You could always ask them for clarification, if all else fails.

Indeed, that is an option, but they are very busy at the moment. Perhaps I can request an audience with them at a later time. I have a few...special talents they may have a use for.

This place does have quite a bit of magic in it. It's nice. It reminds me of home. I suppose, though, it is not so nice for many of those brought here.

Usually they're a few days after the feast. It's impossible to get in touch with them otherwise, save special circumstances. Take advantage of them offering their time when they do it.

I find it irritating to be dragged into another person's war, if anything.

Thank you for the advice. I will make certain to make the most of that opportunity. I am not one to sit around and watch, so I would hate to miss that chance.

I agree. I would prefer to be back home finishing what I was summoned to do, but if I must finish this war before I can do that, then I intend to finish it.

Be careful of what they tell you though, beyond your basic inquiry. Neither side seems to be above manipulating the people they've called to their courts.

Truth be told, the war isn't worth fighting. Not for the people in charge.

[The man's statements bring a confused look to Diarmuid's face. From what he has seen so far, the lord and lady of this court seem honest and straightforward...]

And why do you say that? What is the point of bringing us here only to lie to us?

They need people to fight and to accomplish errands that they otherwise can't. Their game is very long, and very, very exhausting.

[A small light suddenly kindles in Diarmuid's eyes. That almost sounds like a challenge.]

It's a good thing I am patient and not easily tired then, isn't it?

Step carefully, at any rate, and consider everything before you fully commit to the court that's summoned you.

I will keep your warning in mind, though I don't know that I see much choice besides working with the court that summoned me. It is one court or the other, is it not?

[Besides, it will take more than the words of a man who has not identified himself to sway Diarmuid from what looks to him to be a good and noble cause. Still, he does know that even what is good and noble can be corrupted. It does not hurt to keep his eyes open and his senses aware.]

There's plenty of people who've taken their leave of both courts and work to find their own way.

[Diarmuid seems genuinely surprised by this.]

No one has mentioned that...

Why would either court want to inform the people they've summoned to fight on their behalf about an alternate option?

[oathshackledbird]

Because it would be the honorable thing to do? How is one to fight to their fullest ability if they are not given all the information there is about the situation?

[What sense does it make to handicap your own warriors?]

Because that's not in their best interests, now is it? Honour can hold back pragmatism that's needed in state matters, for example.
