I have to admit, when I was told by a few fairies that they were in desperate need of my aid, I was not given to think it was because of their terrible surplus of food. If it was men willing to see their bellies burst that were in such dire need, I could have made many fine recommendations that would have suited them well. I'm afraid my appetite is not quite so large as this feast.

I would like to know if there is any of my family about. You would know them if you saw them. My brother would be like me, only taller and far less clever, my sister would be the pretty one sneering at you, my father wouldn't have time to bother himself with any of you, and my dear nephew would be trying to murder you without any doubt. They are all so very dear to my heart and I could scarce imagine being parted with them for long.

I would ask for the state of my lady wife, but I've heard her name on many tongues already and that's been far more than enough for me already.

{ THE FEAST }

A small man can be found at the feast, lounging in a comfortable seat with a goblet of wine in his hands. He's surrounded by the revelries and the madness, but he's taking no part. Without swords or gold, he's only a man who can scarcely fight for himself and has no weapon other than his wit. He's survived on less before, but he's no happier to be in that position when he's worked so hard to solidify his presence in King's Landing as both Hand and as Master of Coin. In this world where the word Lannister means nothing, he will have to forge a reputation all his own. It's a daunting prospect, which is why he'd much rather be drunk for it.

[ far more than enough for him? hm! some stretching reaching part of her wants to tell him this little speech is already far too much for her. indeed, she doesn't want to speak with him at all -- but he has every right to know what high queen solais proclaimed. and she cannot have him strutting about calling her his wife -- it would not support the lies she's told.

so -- coolly: ]

[Ah, well then, there she is. Just as he remembers her, more or less. Only now she has power and he has none at all.]

Are they? A terrible pity. I'm sure all of this drab world mourns their departure. I will have to roar twice as loud to make up for them. And what of you, Lady Stark? I understand you're in the business of keeping things now.

[steeledskin]

[ perhaps she winces. perhaps she cringes. perhaps it's nothing but a suppressed clearing of her throat. either way, she looks rather uncomfortable. stiff and unhappy. she needs to deal with lord tyrion before her brothers do. ]

Something of that sort, yes, my lord. [ polite and sweet as ever. but the detachment! oh the deep detachment outs her every time. proves her unfeeling. ] House Stark holds lands and a fortress and great gates in the Spinebacks.

[ we are safe here; you cannot hurt us. ]

And yet I have nothing at all. [For now. I'll right that soon enough.] I'm sure it must be a very pleasant place. Will I be expected along? I must confess I don't have the slightest inkling of where these Spinebacks are. My maester seems to have failed to tutor me in drabbish geography in my younger years.

E-expected, my lord? Why would you be...?

[ oh. her pulse picks up. her throat runs dry. he thinks, she fears, that because he is her husband he will-- ]

You cannot have it. The Cothromach is not yours to take. Not by -- [ marriage pact. ] Not by any means.

[ let him keep nothing. ]

Sweet Sansa, why should I want to take what you have kept so well? But I would be negligent in my duties if I was to leave you alone. You need not obey me, but you'll find my counsel invaluable.

[Not that he particularly savored the thought of manipulating Sansa to gain power through this Cothromach. The poor girl did not deserve that, he knew. But he could scarcely be expected to stay in Caer Glaem chasing at the heels of some foreign and painfully absent king and queen.]

[steeledskin]

You are good and kind to offer it, my lord. [ she can feel it -- her heartbeat -- thrumming from her wrists to her throat. it causes her to shake and shiver; she's glad he can only see some small selection of her appearance, filtered through the locket. ] But I am afraid you --

[ no. she cannot be cruel. she cannot tell him that he will be the problem. oh, he's clever enough to know her meaning well enough. but she's kind enough to pretend it's something else. ] You would not be safe with so many wolves giving me council. Would you not be happier keeping your distance?

[ and for a bare moment she might appear a little less than open to his manipulation. ]

[This one has changed, he realizes. She's grown bolder, even if she still hides behind sweet words. He does not resent her that, though it does put him in an unhappy position. Now what else was it he had heard about the Lady Keeper...?]

Wolves, is it? I've met a few, my lady, and not all have tried to snap me up as a morsel. A few kind words and things might be honeyed for the better. Whatever my family has done, I bear no ill will towards your kin.

[Indeed he'd liked Jon, he had helped little Bran, and he respected Robb regardless of how tense their peace negotiations might have gone.]

And yet they bear a great deal against you.

[ mayhaps. she cannot be certain. but she thinks she hears it in the means by which the imp is now discussed amidst the starks. all that happened beforehand -- gifts and camaraderie all alike -- have been soured by the family feud. worsened by the marriage.

sansa inhales. ] Keep your distance from them.

[ i would hate to be the second reason why tyrion lannister was subject to such awful luck and accusation.. ]

You wound me deeply, my lady wife. But if you will it, so be it. This fairy castle is comfortable enough on its own, I suppose. [But don't think I'll forget this, Sansa. You're a sweet child, but you should know it's wiser to have me on your side than not.]

Is it a pretty city? If I'm not to see it, you can do me the courtesy of describing it to me.

They sound a charming bunch.

[Says someone with no room whatsoever to judge someone else about their less than saintly family members. But hey, he's the only real Plantagenet there to represent. He can throw as much shade at other people's families as he pleases.]

Family holidays must be a joy.

Oh, it's a marvelous time, to be sure. Once you've had enough Arbor Red, you might even forget how much you loathe being around most of them. [All but Jaime at least. Tyrion does love his brother and not at all mockingly. The Others take the rest.]

[A man after Richard's own heart, at least when it comes to drinking away the pain of family reunions.]

I suppose it could be worse. There could always be more of them. And less wine.

Often times that's very much the case. But now I am here all alone with only wine as comfort. Do you suppose that fairies keep brothels around?

I wouldn't know about fairies, but I know soldiers. There are enough of them about that brothel or two can't be far off

I should have been clear. I wonder if they keep good brothels. There's nothing wrong with a soldier's whore, to be sure. But I do like them a bit prettier and soldiers are often not so delicate.

[Richard shrugs. Whores aren't really his thing, but hey, you've got to keep up appearances.]

Well, I can't help you there. I haven't been here long enough to go round to rate them all.

Now there's a pity. I'll have to take on the duty of testing the brothels myself. Perhaps that's why the monarchs were in such desperate need of me.

[It's the sort of attitude that his father might have, but in anyone else it can be forgiven. Henry producing bastard after bastard or taking Richard's fiancee as his latest mistress is a matter of national significance. Anyone else's whoring is a joke at best.]

Everyone needs to put their talents to good use somehow.
