Commander. [ she near-swallows his name. it's a difficult thing to share -- not because of the pain, really. the pain is second nature now. but she feels shame. and undue concern for the discomfort it might cause. ]

It was all some time ago -- [ she settles upon this excuse, as though it somehow lightens the blow. some nights she can still remember how her teeth rattled. ]

I... can understand your hesitation around me.

[ Better than most, perhaps. ]

I hope that both of those men were punished for their crimes.

Crimes? [ what a strange way to put it. she never thought of their actions as crimes. ser meryn had followed orders with those deadened eyes. and she had hated him for it -- but could the king's command ever be a crime?

oh. it brings too much uncertainty into her heart. she frowns. instead, she ventures: ] The king is dead. Has died.

Yes. Those who would take advantage of a young girl like that, who would go back on their word...

[ The thought of it angers him still. If only there were more Kingdoms like Ferelden, where rulers had to answer to the Landsmeet. ]

I... do not wish to say that I am glad to hear it, but he seemed to be an exceptionally cruel boy.

You have poor luck in politics, I think.

I had an honest father. [ and so no wonder her birthing into the political world was a difficult and painful one. ] Honesty brings such little luck to anyone.

I wouldn't recommend honesty for those working in this field. It's an effective method for very few people.

I am not so certain it is ever a case of what one deserves.

...I guess it wasn't. Sorry, I just-- don't know what to say. What you went through is terrible and-- geez, I can't believe that asshole brat got to be king. [He doesn't curse often, this show how angry Joffrey made him.]

His father was king before him. This is how it works.

Oh, I-- I know how monarchy works, it was rhetorical. [A shrug.] I can't help feeling you should be wearing that crown and not him.

It wasn't, in the end.
