I have been betrothed too many times, your grace: every match a political one.

[ and most of them quite painful. ]

You have poor luck in politics, I think.

[steeledskin]

I had an honest father. [ and so no wonder her birthing into the political world was a difficult and painful one. ] Honesty brings such little luck to anyone.

I wouldn't recommend honesty for those working in this field. It's an effective method for very few people.

[steeledskin]

I do not think he ever wanted it. But -- [ ah. that's a whole other matter. ] I once thought I wanted nothing more than marriage. But even the falser ones prove themselves unpleasant.

And to think, there are people who manage the whole marriage thing happily.

Mayhaps. Or else they are terribly good liars.

[ cynical! though she knows it's not true. her own mother and father had something of happiness, did they not? eventually. over time. ]

Good at lying to themselves, at least. I believe a great many people fool themselves into thinking they're in love and all that nonsense.

[steeledskin]

[ all that nonsense.

even sansa believes in love, only that it's also not in her cards. ]

[It's hard for a person to believe in love when they're denied even the familial love that's supposed to be a given.]

I believe that everyone is motivated by something. Lust or money or power or whatever. Some may say they only want love, and perhaps they even believe it, but who actually acts on that? There's a reason why farm girls dream of being swept off their feet by a handsome prince and not by the village pauper.

-- But she will learn in time how she would have been happier with the pauper.

Would she? The pauper was likely himself motivated by her more secure financial situation or her good looks, after all.

And yet a whole continent has not taught the pauper that everything is his. Or that he is above the laws of man and gods.

The fact that there are varying degrees of decency doesn't make a less terrible man's actions any less selfish.
