Doesn't reek like it did when the end of the world was literally on the horizon.

The latter. I mean, the coins and marks all exchange at the same rate across the Drabwurld, but you're more likely to take out a loan from a wealthy merchant or be given a gift of gold from a monarch or god than have either kind of interaction with an actual bank.

[Not that he had a bank back home tbh, but he does know what they are.]
