I -- flatter myself it is loyalty. My lady. [All that with fake and dropping decisiveness, and well you asked for a feature and got a noncommittal maybe-quality!]
[assessing each other's suitability for romantic partnership, naturally! dear Anthony, what did you think this was?]
If this is mere displacement, I'd hate to see the outcome of complete severance, my lord. With hearts and minds divided on the borders of not just the Courts, but matters they carry from their own realms, tracking who and what one will stand by is as branching as a spider's web and just as liable to have you stuck in an unfortunate position.
[It's not that he doesn't know how to answer because he certainly does.]
The -- ...The court I hailed from in life. Um. -- Always...
[Which, of course, doesn't exist now, and may be primary consciously but second at best on a whether-you-like-it-or-not scale... Shakes his head.] -- Nothing could change that.
-- I dream of little. My lady. Ah - certainly nothing that would -- be possible, any longer.
[Or if you're going to get pedantic about the wording used there a sort of huff of very tentative voiceless wry humor, for attempted conversationalism's sake - with a twitch of a sheepish smile to match.] Or that I would wish...!
[Another minute shake of his head. A bit of a smile's still there. Still twitchy. Still rueful.]
Years have passed and so has my court - my lady. Even where I'm from. Centuries -- even if I could make impossible wishes, I doubt that they'd be -- my place to make.
[As for being a good conversationalist he might not be talking about himself quite this much straight if he didn't feel somewhat as if this is a test.]
[it's not something she can understand. not wanting to wish because it should be something you attain on your own, she can empathize. not wanting to wish for you weren't sure of the consequences, she could appreciate. but it not being your place to wish for your heart's desire...]
[Which here means yes it is because he won't.] It-it'd surely interfere with the business of more people than me. More important -- far more important - things than me.
[He means that on a couple different scopes, and would try to skirt it with a "you wouldn't understand", as heck he isn't quite sure how he'd explain it, but ah-ha that's hardly proper! Instead, then:]
Nnh - ? [Clips a bit suddenly for such a sound that's the opposite of crisp - he straightens up a bit tighter at Felux's leaning, shoots his eyes off to a corner for a moment but no, that's rude, make eye contact - flicks it from a corner of his eye, manages an "uh - " and realizes that's not much better; shakes his head half to shake it off, and... refocuses.
That was within about three seconds.]
-- No. Not -- ? Not - no one, in particular, really.
[By which he means a couple by turns; he is an average human being. (And they did happen to be young ladies.) But eye-catching's all they did. And then he hit a point of ever after being in very limited company, so alas. (Is he going to be scanned for truthfulness, here?)]
(I don't know what I'm doing, Part 2.)

i'm not sorry
What do you find is your best feature?
What is a charming nonhuman lady like herself doing in a place like this
Er --
[What kind, exactly? What kind?]
I -- flatter myself it is loyalty. My lady. [All that with fake and dropping decisiveness, and well you asked for a feature and got a noncommittal maybe-quality!]
no subject
Quite admirable, in this day and age. In this realm, even.
no subject
Er - [A repressed huffing sound that was meant to be a self-deprecating laugh.] - I'd not know - about this day and age. But -- !
[And shakes his head lightly as if to fill in for some of that thought while he gets it back in order.]
-- Surely some of those in this realm are - merely displaced from where their loyalties would be. Normally. -- My lady.
[And he hasted it a little towards the end there. Drat it, what is it exactly that they're doing here, again?]
no subject

Uh -- a... [Long "a".] ...spider's web doesn't attach to nothing - however, and so they do, er - they do still have loyalty.
[Do not tell him he was insane for thinking that made sense.]
no subject
And who owns your loyalty now?
no subject
-- Ah.
[It's not that he doesn't know how to answer because he certainly does.]
The -- ...The court I hailed from in life. Um. -- Always...

[Yes, he is still trying to keep up.]
no subject
[he's doing well enough at keeping up, she had written "good conversationalist" on her card.]
no subject

So it's more that you won't.
no subject
[Which here means yes it is because he won't.] It-it'd surely interfere with the business of more people than me. More important -- far more important - things than me.
[He means that on a couple different scopes, and would try to skirt it with a "you wouldn't understand", as heck he isn't quite sure how he'd explain it, but ah-ha that's hardly proper! Instead, then:]
-- If you understand.
i'm sort of sorry
[ anthony pay attention to me!!! !! ]
You never did tell me whether you had a sweetheart back home.
[ you know. home. where you lived. when you were alive. before you died. because you're dead. dEAD ]
IF I HAD BEEN DRINKING ANYTHING...
Flustered blinking.] I -- ?
I did not -- no, my lord. [As conversational as possible, which is stilted.
And indeed even if he'd had one it'd have surely been quite difficult to hold one down over several hundreds of years dead.]
no subject
Really? No, I can't imagine such a thing -- surely there had to be someone. A young lady that caught your eye...?
[ your eye. your bright red dead person eyes hanging out of your face. cmon anthony surely they have necromantic tinder. ]
A young man?
[ he doesn't judge
just everything else]no subject
That was within about three seconds.]
-- No. Not -- ? Not - no one, in particular, really.
